A dead silence fell over the alcove. The music in the restaurant seemed to fade into nothing. Every eye in the dining room turned toward table seven.

Caldwell shot up from his chair, his face turning a dangerous, mottled shade of purple. The wine dripped from his crotch like a gory wound.

Alejandro stood up gracefully, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket to dab at his ruined slacks, though his dark eyes were furious.

Chloe immediately grabbed a linen towel. "Mr. Caldwell, Mr. Navarro, I am so deeply sorry. Please, let me—"

"Get your filthy hands away from me!" Caldwell roared, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls.

Thomas, the manager, practically sprinted across the dining room, his face pale with terror. "Mr. Caldwell, I am so sorry, sir. We will cover the dry cleaning. The meal is on the house, I assure you."

"Dry cleaning?" Caldwell spat, pointing a trembling finger at Chloe. "This is an $8,000 suit, and she just drenched my lead investor in cheap wine!"

"It was a 1995 Bordeaux, sir," Chloe corrected quietly—an instinctive defense of the wine.

Caldwell's eyes bulged. "Did you just talk back to me, you stupid, clumsy little girl? Who hired you?"

He turned to Thomas, practically foaming at the mouth. "Fire her right now! Throw her out on the street where she belongs!"

"Sir, it was an accident. Your elbow struck the tray," Chloe said, keeping her voice incredibly calm.

She knew the golden rule of service was to take the blame, but the sheer injustice of the moment, and the history between them, refused to let her bow her head.

Caldwell took a threatening step toward her. He was inches from her face, smelling of expensive cologne and sour arrogance. The four foreign investors watched the scene unfold with deep discomfort. In their cultures, berating the working class in such a crass, public manner was considered a massive display of poor breeding.

"You listen to me, you illiterate peasant," Caldwell hissed, loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear. "Here, you are nothing. You are a mindless plate carrier. You don't have the brain capacity to understand the kind of money sitting at this table. Men like me move the earth. Women like you mop the floors we walk on. You're uneducated. You're worthless. And you are entirely replaceable."

He turned back to his guests, sweeping his hand toward Chloe as if she were a piece of trash. He smirked, switching to a slow, condescending English to address the Europeans.
