Cleaning this part of your electric rice cooker can save you millions of dong in electricity bills every year: Many people don't know this.

Failing to Clean Your Rice Cooker Properly Can Shorten Its Lifespan and Waste Electricity
The rice cooker is an essential household appliance found in almost every home and used on a daily basis. However, while most people focus on cooking with it, very few pay enough attention to cleaning and maintaining it properly. After a period of use, many rice cookers begin to show problems such as taking longer to cook rice, consuming more electricity, producing unevenly cooked rice, or even causing the rice to burn at the bottom.
The main reason behind these issues is improper cleaning. When cleaning a rice cooker, many people only wipe the outer surface and completely overlook the heating plate inside. This part plays a critical role in how the appliance operates.
The heating plate is the primary heat-generating component of the rice cooker. It has a structure similar to an electric stove and is usually designed with a slightly curved, circular shape. The condition of the heating plate directly affects the lifespan of the cooker, the quality of the cooked rice, and overall energy efficiency. During regular use, rice residue, moisture, and dust can easily accumulate on the heating plate, yet it is often ignored and rarely cleaned correctly.
To clean the heating plate properly, extend the life of your rice cooker, and save electricity, follow the steps below.
First, before cleaning any electrical appliance, always unplug it from the power outlet to ensure safety.
Next, prepare a sponge or dishwashing pad, a damp cloth, and some white vinegar.
Pour white vinegar onto the rough side of the sponge. Gently scrub away dirt, stains, and dust on the heating plate, making sure to clean the bottom of the inner pot as well. If the stains are stubborn, soak the heating plate with vinegar and let it sit for 10–15 minutes before wiping again. This helps loosen hardened residue without damaging the surface.
After that, use a damp cloth to wipe away the loosened dirt and vinegar residue from the heating plate. If the stains are still visible, repeat the process a few more times until the surface is clean.
Finally, use a dry cloth to wipe the heating plate thoroughly to ensure no moisture or vinegar remains. This step is important to prevent corrosion and electrical issues.
Alternatively, you can mix white vinegar with toothpaste to clean the heating plate more effectively. Dip a soft toothbrush into the mixture and apply it to the heating plate. The vinegar helps soften stubborn stains, while the mild abrasives in toothpaste provide excellent cleaning power without scratching the surface.
Brush gently in circular motions that follow the shape of the heating plate until all dirt is removed. Then, wipe the area clean with a cloth.
Once cleaned, the heating plate will look shiny and smooth again. Regular maintenance of this component helps the rice cooker operate efficiently, reduces unnecessary electricity consumption, and significantly extends its lifespan.
The outer body of the rice cooker should also be cleaned using a damp cloth or a cloth lightly soaked in vinegar to remove grease and dust.
Inside the cooker, there is usually an inner lid designed to prevent foam from overflowing during cooking. Over time, this part can accumulate residue and grime. If not cleaned regularly, it may develop mold or unpleasant odors, which can negatively affect the taste and quality of future batches of rice. This inner lid should be removed and washed frequently. Additionally, remember to clean the rubber gasket around the lid, as it can trap moisture and food particles.
For rice cookers with a fixed inner lid that cannot be removed, simply wipe the area with a damp cloth and then dry it thoroughly with a clean cloth.
By cleaning all parts of the rice cooker regularly and correctly, you can ensure better cooking performance, improved hygiene, lower energy consumption, and a longer-lasting appliance.
