Understanding Ringworm: Causes, Symptoms, Transmission, and the Importance of Medical Evaluation

I am Dr. Pau Zúñiga, and I’ll explain it to you 👩🏻‍⚕️

What is ringworm?

Ringworm is a superficial skin infection, along with other skin structures, caused by fungi known as dermatophytes.

Why does it occur?

It develops when these fungi grow on the keratin of the skin. Humidity, heat, excessive sweating, the use of tight clothing, small skin injuries, or a weakened immune system can promote its appearance.

Most common symptoms:

  • Red patches with raised, scaly borders

  • Circular or ring-shaped appearance

  • Itching (pruritus)

  • On the scalp: areas of hair loss

  • On nails: thickening, color changes, or brittleness

How is it transmitted?

Ringworm is contagious and can spread through:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact

  • Contaminated objects (towels, clothing, combs, footwear)

  • Infected animals (especially cats and dogs)

  • Wet surfaces, such as shower floors or locker rooms

Importance of medical evaluation

Although it may seem like a simple lesion, not all circular lesions are ringworm. A medical diagnosis helps confirm the type of fungus, recommend the appropriate treatment (topical or oral), and avoid complications, recurrences, or spreading to others.
