They Mocked the Ex-Wife in Court — Not Knowing She's a Billionaire
Silas looked at the floor for a moment, then at her. He came here because the filing scared him, he said. "That's good. That means it has teeth," he paused.
"It also means he's recalibrating. If he came in person, he's done with the peripheral pressure." "What comes after peripheral?" she said. Silas picked up his coffee from the bench, held it without drinking. Direct, he said.
She looked at him like what? I don't know yet, he said. But it'll come faster now. He set the coffee down.
Go home and check on Eleanor. Don't stay late tonight. I need to make some calls. She drove home and checked on Eleanor, who was fine, who was watching her program, and had chicken soup on the stove that she'd made herself.
Because Eleanor's stubbornness about being capable was both a comfort and a recurring source of the particular tension between love and helplessness. She sat with her grandmother through dinner and they talked about small things. The neighbor's new dog, a program Eleanor had seen the night before, whether the truck's heater was going to make it through another winter. She was doing the dishes when her phone rang.
Decker, the plate from Thursday night, he said, We got a full read from another source. The bike is registered to a man named Torrance Webb. He's got two prior, one assault, one weapons charge, both in the last four years, both reduced. He paused.
He works for a private asset management company out of the regional office. The company's name is Harrow Capital. She dried her hands on the dish towel. Outside the kitchen window, the night was complete dark.
No stars now, clouds having moved in from the west. "And Harrow Capital," she said, "is the company that has been acquiring the transferred properties?"
Decker nodded. Every property Massen's assessment office has pushed through in the last 6 years. Everyone.
"Harrow Capital is the end buyer." She stood in her grandmother's kitchen with the dish towel in her hands. "This isn't a local real estate scheme," she said.
"No," Decker said.
It isn't. How big? A pause. We're still mapping it.
But the Okafor property and the Harmon property and Petrovsky's place, all three would give Harrow Capital a contiguous parcel of about 80 acres along the county road corridor. With your grandmother's half-acre, it connects. He stopped. Ria, the county road corridor is the only viable route for the regional logistics hub the state approved last year.
Land along that corridor is going to be worth I know what it's going to be worth, she said. She set the dish towel on the counter, the corridor. She'd read about the hub in the local paper back in the spring and filed it away as one of those economic development announcements that meant something to someone and usually meant nothing to the people who actually lived in the affected area. She hadn't thought about it in months.
She hadn't connected it to anything. But the half-acre on the county road that her grandfather had maintained for 40 years, that Eleanor still called home, that had the gravel driveway he'd laid himself in the old pecan tree he'd planted the year Ria's mother was born, it was the connector. Without it, the parcel didn't cohere. Without it, the corridor access was fractured.
Without Eleanor Mercer's house on the county road, Harrow Capital's 80-acre consolidation had a gap in it that made the whole thing functionally worthless. Her grandmother's house wasn't a welfare concern. It was a keystone. And she, Ria Mercer, had been walking around for 3 weeks thinking this was about Devlin shorting her hours.
Silas knew. She said it wasn't fully a question. He suspected the scale. Decker said carefully.
He didn't have the Harrow connection confirmed until tonight. And he still she stopped herself. She thought about what Silas had said that morning in the shop. You came in for work, not for a war.
She thought about what she'd said back. That's not your decision. Where is he right now? She said, making calls, Decker said.
He's been on the phone for 3 hours. To who? A pause. Longer than the others.
Decker, she said. To who? People who've ridden with him a long time, Decker said. people who owe him something or who understand what this is or who've been watching Harrow Capital from other counties where it's already done what it's trying to do here. He stopped.
Ria, he's not going to let this become something that costs you more than you already know about. But you need to understand when Silas makes calls like this, it means the thing we're dealing with is bigger than what three or four people in a shop can handle. She looked out the kitchen window at the dark. How many people? she said.
