They Mocked the Ex-Wife in Court — Not Knowing She's a Billionaire
We have documentation of Massen's independent threat campaign. We have Puit's testimony. An incident here tonight takes hours to resolve and gives Massen time to build a counternarrative. Crane said county law enforcement in this county on a call to Crow Iron at 2 in the morning with Kyle Massen present.
He let the sentence finish itself. Silas said we call the AG desk directly. Burch has the emergency contact. It's 2:00 in the morning.
Decker said, I know what time it is. Silas said, Call Burch. Tell her what's happening. She'll know whether the desk has a night line. Decker had his phone out.
She looked at the headlights in the high windows, still stationary, still running. The engine sound was steady and patient, and she tracked it the way she tracked an engine she suspected was about to do something. Listening for the change, the shift in load, the signal that something was about to happen. Then the headlights moved not toward the building.
They turned partially, swinging left, pointing toward the south tree line. A communication, a signal between the two vehicles. She had seen this once before in a different context, and she understood it. Massen was coordinating.
He had someone in the south tree line, and he was orienting them. "He's moving the south vehicle," she said. Crane saw it, too. "South vehicle comes around the building's blind side," he said.
East wall has no windows. If they come through the east wall, there's no door on the east wall, Rex said. There doesn't need to be a door, Crane said. She looked at Silas.
He looked at her. The same exchange as before. Not a question, not a directive, but a recognition. They'd been here before in various forms across the past weeks, across the incremental escalations, across every moment where something larger revealed itself.
They'd arrived at each of those together. The bikes, she said. Yes, he said. All of them out the front bay now.
Decker looked up from his phone. Ria, if we're visible, they can't make a move that creates witness exposure, she said. Massen came here in the dark. If this shop is running and loud and lit, whatever he does becomes a choice he made in front of evidence.
He came to intimidate us into stillness. We give him the opposite of stillness. Silas said to Crane, "Get Moss. Both of you on bikes." He looked at Rex.
"The Shovelhead. She's ready." Rex said he was already moving. She went to the bay door controls and found the switch by feel and hit it. And the bay doors rolled up and the cold came in all at once.
A wall of October air that hit her face and hands and cut straight through her jacket. And she didn't stop moving. She went to the nearest bike, the Road King Silas's, and found it by touch and swung a leg over it, and found the key by memory, and kicked it to life. And the sound of it in the open bay was enormous and immediate, and she felt it in her sternum the way she always did.
The particular resonance of a machine saying, "I am here to everyone within half a mile." Rex's Shovelhead started. Crane's Road Glide came alive. Moss was on the Dyna. four engines in the open bay and the sound of them went out through the bay doors and up into the cold air and out to the county road and into both tree lines. And she understood in that moment why Silas had told her to keep the shop visible, not as a strategy, not as a tactic, but as a statement about what they were, about what didn't go dark and didn't go quiet, regardless of what was parked in the trees.
She looked at the headlights in the high windows. They hadn't moved again. Massen's truck was still on the gravel road, still running, still pointed at the building, and now it was pointed at a building with its bay doors open and four motorcycles running and the overhead lights back on full. Decker came to her elbow.
Burch reached the night line, Chad, he said. A G duty officer is calling county sheriff directly. Not the local substation. The sheriff.
They're flagging Massen by name. They're citing the referral number. How long? She said, "20, 30 minutes," he said.
She nodded. Kept the Road King running. Kept her hands on the bars. "He's not going to wait 30 minutes," she said.
No, Decker said. So, we hold 30 minutes, she said. From the south tree line, she heard it before she saw it. The second vehicle moved, Not toward the building.
It came out of the trees and onto the county road and its headlights swung and for a moment they pointed directly into the bay and she was looking at a truck, dark-colored, big and in the cab she could see a shape that resolved into a man and the man was on a phone. Massen's truck on the gravel road also moved, turned all the way around facing back toward the county road, the headlights now pointing away from the building. She kept her hands on the bars and watched. Both vehicles sat on the county road for 40 seconds running, not leaving, not approaching.
40 seconds of the particular paralysis that came when a calculation had failed and the man doing it was running a new one. Then the truck she recognized as Massen's pulled out, turned south, accelerated. The second truck followed. The county road was empty.
She kept the Road King running for another full minute before she let herself breathe at full depth. Then she reached down and killed the engine. In the sudden relative quiet, the other bikes still running sounded louder and she heard Rex let the Shovelhead idle down and crane and moss and the bay went to a low collective rumble and then to silence as each engine stopped. The cold came back in the absence of the exhaust heat.
