No old restaurant. Neutral territory.

Lauren looked healthier than the last time I saw her. Tired, but present.

She said therapy had forced her to admit something she hated. “I thought the wedding would fix everything.”

I asked what she meant. “I treated marriage like a line.”

“Before the line, I was still completely free. After it, I would become fully committed.” She shook her head.

“I know how insane that sounds now.” I said nothing.

Lauren continued. She had convinced herself that anything unresolved before the ceremony could be cleaned up before the vows.

The kiss in Nashville. Mason’s texts.

The necklace. Her doubts.

One final night could absorb all of it, and then at four o’clock Saturday she would become the version of herself who never looked backward. “I thought the ceremony could reset my character.”

“That’s not what vows do,” I said. Lauren nodded.

“I know.”

Then she said the most honest sentence she ever gave me. “I wanted one last experience where nobody could tell me what I owed anyone.”

There it was. Not closure.

Not fate. Not unfinished love.

Freedom without consequence.

She wanted to be untethered for one night while expecting the man waiting at the altar to remain fully tethered to her. Marriage began tomorrow for her.

Commitment began whenever it was convenient.

I asked whether she had spoken to Mason since the hotel. “Once.”

“What happened?” “He apologized.”

“For lying?” “Mostly.”

“Did he ask you to try again?” Lauren smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

That surprised me less than it should have. “What did you say?”

“No.” She stirred her coffee.

“I finally understood that being chosen by Mason was never some grand prize.” The sentence sounded like something she had practiced in therapy.

Maybe it was still true. Either way, it no longer concerned me.

Before we left, Lauren asked whether I hated her. “No.”

“Do you forgive me?” I thought about it.
