“Yes.” She nodded.

“I know.”

That conversation hurt more than any argument we ever had. It was also the first honest conversation we had experienced in months.

We discussed the apartment. Both names were on the lease.

I had no intention of changing locks or throwing her belongings into the hallway. Lauren would stay with her parents until we negotiated termination with the landlord.

Wedding gifts would be returned where possible. Cash gifts unopened.

Shared deposits divided according to who paid them. No revenge.

No social-media posts. No public humiliation.

Thomas seemed surprised when I explained the plan. “You don’t owe us that much grace.”

I answered, “I owe myself a clean exit.”

Lauren cried again. That time I did not comfort her.

Natalie ended her engagement to Mason the same weekend. She called me once more several days later.

Mason claimed nothing sexual happened with Lauren. Natalie said she believed him.

“It doesn’t help,” she said. I agreed.

She had read the messages. Mason intentionally pursued another engaged woman because he wanted proof of his emotional power.

Whether the hotel bed had been used was secondary. Betrayal had happened much earlier.

Natalie told me Mason begged her to reconsider. He said he panicked because marriage made him question whether he had left unresolved feelings behind.

She asked whether he intended to build a life with Lauren. He admitted he did not know.

Natalie said, “Then you destroyed two relationships to answer a question you didn’t even need answered.” That ended their conversation.

Mason called me once. His number appeared while I was driving home from work.

I almost ignored it. Then curiosity won.

“Garrett, I think we should clear the air,” he began. I laughed.

“There isn’t any air to clear.” He said the situation had gotten out of control.

I asked which part he believed was outside his control. “I never expected you to cancel the wedding.”

“That sounds like a planning problem.” He became defensive.

“Lauren and I have history you don’t understand.” “You have history.”

“There’s a difference?” “Yes.”

I slowed at a red light. “History is what happened before. You made it current because your ego needed evidence.”

Mason went quiet. Then he tried something else.
