Mason did not want a new life with Lauren. He wanted proof that a woman who had once chosen him could still be pulled away from another man years later. Lauren thought she was reopening an old love story.

Mason thought he was checking whether he still had access.

I asked Natalie what she intended to do. “End my engagement.”

“Tonight?” “Tonight.”

Then she asked whether I had canceled my wedding. I said yes.

“Good.” Her voice softened. “I’m sorry that sentence sounds awful.”

“It doesn’t.”

Before we ended the call, Natalie asked for Lauren’s phone number. I told her I would send it only if she wanted direct contact for a specific reason. Natalie said she wanted Lauren to receive one screenshot before making whatever choice she was about to make.

I understood. I sent the number.

At 1:09 in the morning, I texted Lauren for the first time since leaving. The wedding has been canceled. The venue, officiant, vendors, both families, and wedding party have been informed. We will deal with the apartment, gifts, and shared expenses calmly later. Before you make any more decisions tonight, ask Mason whether Natalie Kerr knows where he is.

Then I turned off notifications. I did not know where Lauren was when she read it. Later, she told me everything.

Mason had booked a suite at a downtown hotel. Lauren arrived shortly after eleven. They ordered drinks.

She said nothing physical had happened beyond kissing when my message came through. That distinction mattered to her at first. It did not matter much to me.

Lauren looked at the name Natalie Kerr and asked Mason who she was. According to Lauren, Mason froze for several seconds before saying, “It’s complicated.”

Lauren asked whether they were still together. He said they had been emotionally separated for months.

Then she asked whether they were engaged. Mason did not answer quickly enough.

Lauren stood up. “Are you engaged?”

“Yes, technically.” That was his answer.

Lauren later said the word technically made her feel physically sick because it sounded exactly like the kind of language she had been using with me. Technically we were not married yet. Technically one night happened before the vows.

Technically loyalty could begin tomorrow. Both of them had built excuses out of boundaries they already understood.

Before Mason could explain further, Natalie’s message arrived. One screenshot.

If she comes, I know I could have had her anytime.

Lauren looked from the screen to Mason. “Is this real?”

Mason said Natalie had invaded his privacy. Lauren repeated the question.

He said the conversation was being taken out of context. She asked what context made it better.

Mason became irritated. “You wanted to come.”

Lauren said, “You told me you wanted me back.”

“I said I never stopped caring.” “You said you loved me.”

“I do love you in a way.” Lauren later told me that phrase was when whatever fantasy remained finally collapsed.
