Vanessa arrived late afternoon. She opened the door cautiously, as if unsure what awaited her. She closed it carefully, took off her shoes, and stood silently in the entrance for a few seconds, as if feeling the tension in the air. She called his name once and waited.

Logan appeared in the living room shortly after: tired eyes, hardened expression. There was no shouting, no tears—only the weight of someone carrying a world on his shoulders.

She tried to start by saying she wanted to explain. He crossed his arms, waiting for her to say something worth hearing.

Vanessa began explaining that lunch with Brandon was a coincidence, that they were discussing a complicated case, that the others were at the next table, that everything probably looked more intimate than it really was. But Logan already knew that voice. He recognized the pauses, the detours, the attempt to twist the speech to turn mistakes into misunderstandings.

He cut her off with a direct question: was there or wasn't there something between her and Brandon?

She hesitated, bit her lower lip, looked away, took a deep breath, and finally admitted that yes, in recent months, she had grown emotionally close to him; that they had kissed a few times, exchanged messages, met outside the office; that she had felt pressured, overwhelmed, confused; that it wasn't an affair, it was just an escape.

Logan listened in silence. Each word was a blow, but he showed no reaction. What hurt him most wasn't even the kiss, but the way she used the word "escape"—as if what they were living had become a prison only for her.
