Black Twins Threatened By Racist Bullies — Unaware They Are Black Belt Fighters
The kind of questions that do not resolve in weeks or months. The kind that sit in files and grow in heavier with time and eventually, if the system works the way it is supposed to work, which it sometimes does and sometimes does not, produce answers that no one who wrote the original memo ever intended to be found. On a Saturday morning in late June, 7 weeks after the council session, Micah Kaine delivered newspapers in the Collier Ridge subdivision. He entered through the pedestrian gate at 5:18 a.m. He delivered 26 papers.
He was not stopped. He was not questioned. He was not followed. He finished his route in 34 minutes, walked back through the gate, and found Wendell leaning against the sedan, arms crossed, coffee in hand.
All good. All good. They drove home. Opal was awake.
The medication was on the counter. The kitchen smelled like coffee in the particular warmth of a house where someone has been up early enough to turn on the stove and let it heat the room before anyone else arrives. Micah sat at the table. Wendell sat across from him.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The silence was not uncomfortable. It was the silence of two people who have been through something together and have arrived at a place that is not perfect but is better than where they were and who understand that the distance between those two points was measured not in miles but in documents and recordings and the specific exhausting unglamorous work of making a system answer for itself. Uncle Wendell.
Yeah. Are they going to stop for real? Wendell looked at his nephew, 12 years old, 93 lbs, newsprint ink on his fingers, a voice recorder in his satchel, and seven files on a laptop, and a scar behind his right ear where a satchel strap had caught and torn because a man with a badge decided that a boy with newspapers was a threat. Some of them will stop.
Some of them will transfer and do the same thing somewhere else. Some of them will get retrained and come back and be a little more careful about where the cameras are pointed. He took a sip of coffee. The system doesn't fix itself overnight, Micah.
It moves slowly with a lot of pushing and sometimes it moves back. Then why do it? Because the file exists. Because your recordings exist?
Because Mr. Overton's statement exists. Because every piece of it is documented. And documented things are harder to pretend didn't happen. He set down the coffee.
You built that file before I got home. Seven stops, seven recordings, every one of them logged. You were 12 years old and you did what most adults never learned to do. You kept the record.
Micah looked at his hands. The ink was under his fingernails. It would not come out until tomorrow. "Did I do it right?"
"You did it exactly right." The morning light came through the kitchen window and lay across the table in a long rectangle that touched both of their hands. Opal's medication organizer sat on the counter. The jar labeled house sat on top of the refrigerator.
The delivery manifest sat under the edge of the microwave. 26 addresses printed in small type. The same route Micah would run again on Tuesday. The same sidewalks, the same houses, the same subdivision with wrought-iron letters on the stone pillars and a pedestrian gate that had no lock.
The Department of Justice review was ongoing. The Internal Affairs investigation was ongoing. The DA's evaluation of Ashford's reports was ongoing. The redacted memo remained redacted.
The deleted body camera footage remained deleted. The four minutes from January, the ones listed as corrupted, were gone in a way that suggested they were not corrupted at all, but were instead removed by someone who understood exactly what they contained and decided that their absence was preferable to their existence. Somewhere in a federal building in Washington, a file with 51 entries sat on a server behind three layers of encryption. Waiting, not for justice.
Justice is a word people use when they want the ending to be clean. What the file was waiting for was process. The slow, grinding, imperfect process of a system being forced to look at itself and account for what it saw. Whether it would look honestly was still an open question.
Wendell finished his coffee. Micah finished his cereal. Opal came into the kitchen and sat down and did not ask what they were talking about because she already knew. The way mothers and grandmothers always know, not the details, but the weight of it, the shape of it.
The fact that the two men at her table were carrying something together now that one of them had been carrying alone for too long. She put her hand on Micah's shoulder gently. The way you touch someone you are proud of. The way you touch someone when the thing you are most proud of is not what they did but what they did not become.
Despite everything that had tried to shape them otherwise, the sun came up over Maynard Street. The lawns on the south side were patchy. The lawns on the north side were perfect. The distance between them was one road and a pedestrian gate and a set of assumptions that had been challenged but not yet dismantled, questioned but not yet answered, exposed but not yet changed.
The newspaper would be delivered again on Tuesday.
