"When Elijah Brooks earned a perfect score and documented every step, why was that not established preparation?" Whitman hesitated. "The result was inconsistent with available indicators." "Which indicators?"

He mentioned Mercer East. He mentioned the scholarship. He mentioned the absence of graduate courses in Elijah's record. Bennett let him finish.

"You keep describing what Mr. Brooks had not been given," she said. "You have yet to describe a mathematical error he made." Whitman looked toward his attorney. There was no answer there.

Elijah remembered something simpler, the yellow folder, the impossible problem, the smirk, the silence after the chalk stopped moving.
