You need to report that. Report what? All of it. He didn't accuse me. He built a sentence around the accusation so he could deny it later.
That's worse. Owen emerged behind them. Whitman is like that with everybody. Nina turned. No, he isn't.
He grilled me last year in linear algebra. Did he suggest you cheated every time you did well? Owen adjusted the strap on his expensive backpack. I'm saying he likes pressure. It's his whole thing.
Elijah looked at him. Pressure tells you what's inside something. It doesn't choose one student and keep pressing after it already has the answer. Owen had no reply. The following Thursday, Rain tapped against the tall classroom windows.
Students arrived tired from midterms in other courses. Whitman entered carrying the yellow folder Elijah had once seen in his office. He did not open his lecture notes. Instead, he placed the folder at the center of the desk and looked straight at the third row.
Since some students seem eager to impress, he said, "Let's do something more worthy of applause." He turned to the board. The first line was an infinite series nested inside a nonlinear transformation. The second introduced a boundary function that appeared to destroy the symmetry of the first. By the fourth line, the expression had spread across two panels of slate.
Whitman added a limiting condition, then a final integral whose upper bound depended on the very function the students were supposed to isolate. Half the class stopped pretending to follow. Owen leaned toward the student beside him and whispered, "What even is that?" Whitman heard him. This time he did not object.
He capped the marker and folded his arms. This problem came from an old research qualifying examination. He announced it was designed for doctoral candidates. No one in this room should be able to solve it. He let the statement settle.
Then he turned toward Elijah. But perhaps Mr. Brooks would like to try. The room went still. Nina looked at the yellow folder, then at the board. This was not instruction.
The professor had chosen a weapon and announced in advance that Elijah could not survive it. Elijah remained seated for a moment. He could refuse. The problem was outside the syllabus and everyone knew it. He could tell Dean Bennett later that Whitman had tried to humiliate him.
He could protect his grade, finish the semester, and leave the professor with nothing more dramatic than another insinuation. But a refusal would become the story Whitman wanted. The scholarship student had finally been exposed by real mathematics. Elijah closed his notebook and stood. He was not angry.
He was not embarrassed. He was quiet in a way that made people lean forward. As he walked to the board, he heard the rain and the faint electrical hum of the ceiling lights. He felt 30 pairs of eyes follow him. He also felt something else, the sudden recognition of a shape.
The equation was monstrous, only if approached from the direction Whitman expected. Beneath the extra terms, the same structure Elijah had been studying at his kitchen table appeared in disguise. The boundary function created instability, but it also revealed where the expression could be separated. Elijah stopped in front of the board and read every line again.
Whitman smiled. Take your time. It was the smile of a man who believed time itself was on his side. Elijah reached for the chalk. At first, the class assumed he was only setting up notation.
That was what students did when they were nervous at the board. Write something that looked intelligent. buy a few seconds and hope the professor interrupted before the real struggle began. Elijah defined the boundary case. Then he drew a vertical line through the center of the expression and rewrote the nonlinear substitution on either side of it.
Whitman's smile disappeared. One clean step became three. Three became seven. Elijah did not pause dramatically or fish for ideas out loud. He moved with the control of someone who was not fighting the problem but listening to it.
Each transformation removed something Whitman had added to make the equation frightening. The long terms collapsed. The false complexity fell away. Whitman stepped closer. You're assuming convergence too early.
Elijah did not turn. No sir, I'm separating the boundary case first. The boundary is dependent only before the transformation. Elijah underlined the new variable. A few students sat straighter.
Owen frowned at his own notes, then looked at the board. Nina slowly lowered her pen. The room had the charged stillness classrooms almost never reached. The feeling that something was changing in real time, and everyone could sense it. Elijah crossed out one term, reconstructed it with a transformed substitution, and simplified the expression Whitman had presented as impossible.
Two minutes later, he boxed an intermediate result. Whitman opened the yellow folder. His eyes moved from the paper inside it to Elijah's work. The route in the archived solution consumed almost two pages and relied on a long approximation. Elijah had bypassed the approximation entirely.
3 minutes after boxing the result, Elijah circled the final answer. Then he set the chalk down and stepped aside. No one spoke. Whitman walked to the board. He read every line once, then again.
He lifted the chalk as if he had found an error, but his hand stopped halfway to the slate. The derivation was correct. Worse for him, it was elegant. Elijah had solved the equation by a shorter path than the one in Whitman's archived notes.
Owen let out a stunned breath that became a laugh. No way, Nina whispered. He actually did it. Whitman turned sharply. Silence.
But the authority in his voice had changed. It no longer sounded secure. It sounded shaken. He faced Elijah. Where did you see this before?
