One student wanted to know whether Nina's picture could be posted online. Elijah answered none of them. He stared at the email subject line until the letters seemed to detach from their meaning. Suspected academic misconduct at Bellweather. A finding of serious cheating could mean suspension.
It could remove his scholarship. Even a pending investigation could follow him into research applications. Whitman had taken the moment that should have ended the humiliation and turned Elijah's brilliance into the basis for a prosecution. Maya was awake when he came home. She stood at the stove in her hospital scrubs making rice before work.
One look at his face and she turned off the burner. Tell me. Elijah placed his backpack beside the kitchen table. He began with the equation because that part felt safe. He described the substitution, the boundary case, and the way the series collapsed.
Maya understood almost none of the mathematics, but she understood that her son's voice changed when he talked about solving it. Then he told her what Whitman had said. Maya sat down. He told her about Dean Bennett, the witness statements, and the email accusing him of theft.
For a long time, she was silent. The apartment's radiator clicked. A bus sighed to a stop on the street below and pulled away again. Finally, she asked, "Did you steal anything?"
"No." "Did you see that problem before today?" "No." "Then we start there." Elijah leaned back.
"Starting there doesn't stop him from putting it in a file." "No, but it stops his file from becoming your truth." Maya reached across the table. Her hands were dry and rough from years of hospital soap. Did you let him make you feel small?
Elijah looked away. For a second, he said. She squeezed his hand. A second is human. Staying there would be the mistake.
Her phone alarm sounded. She had to leave for work in 14 minutes. Maya stood, found a clean legal pad in the drawer, and placed it in front of him. Write down everything while you remember. Dates, words, who was there.
Don't make it beautiful. Make it exact. Elijah almost smiled. You sound like a lawyer. I clean up after surgeons.
Exact is how people stay alive. When she left, Elijah opened his worn notebook and began reconstructing the semester. He did not sleep. At 8 the next morning, Dean Bennett convened an emergency meeting with Priya Raman, Marcus Lee, the chair of academic integrity and counsel for the university.
Whitman joined by video with an attorney from the faculty association. He looked composed again. Whitman claimed he had selected the archived problem because Elijah's midterm solution suggested familiarity with graduate techniques. He said he hoped an unscripted demonstration would either confirm exceptional ability or reveal memorized work.
When Elijah produced a novel derivation, Whitman said his suspicion increased because the result was statistically inconsistent with Elijah's academic history. Raman interrupted. Which part of his academic history? He attended Mercer East High School. It offers no advanced analysis sequence.
Neither do most high schools. Whitman's attorney asked Raman to let him finish. Whitman then presented what he called objective evidence. Three nights earlier, Elijah's student ID card had been used to enter Partridge Hall at 9:17 p.m. The building contained the mathematics faculty offices.
Whitman said that when he arrived Monday, the yellow qualifying exam folder was not aligned with the other files on his shelf. Are you claiming he entered your office? Bennett asked. I am saying the opportunity existed. Was your office locked?
I believe so. Was there evidence of entry? Not physical evidence. Does the exterior access log show which room a student enters once inside? No.
Bennett folded her hands. Then the objective fact is that Mr. Brooks entered a building open to students until midnight. A building where the solution was stored. Raman opened a scanned copy of the archived key. This solution and the one on the board are materially different.
A sophisticated student could disguise copied work. by replacing it with a better proof. Whitman's face tightened. You have long objected to my standards, Professor Raman. I object to calling prejudice a standard. The meeting ended without a resolution.
Academic Integrity scheduled a preliminary hearing for Monday. Until then, Elijah's midterm score and course status would remain frozen. Whitman was placed on paid administrative leave from classroom duties, but he retained access to his records so he could prepare his defense. That last decision would nearly cost the university the truth.
Elijah spent Friday morning in the student advocacy office. A case adviser named Miriam Cole explained the integrity process while he stared at a poster about fairness and belonging. The burden is preponderance of evidence. She said it means they decide whether misconduct is more likely than not.
He has an entry time and a crooked folder. He has an entry time. The folder description is his statement. He was my professor. Miriam understood what he meant.
Whitman's title would enter the room before Elijah did. That is why we need more than your denial, she said. Did anyone see you in Partridge Hall Sunday night? Probably. Why were you there?
Elijah hesitated. I was in room 214. Doing what? Tutoring. Who?
Nina. Miriam looked relieved. Then she confirms it. She left at 9. And you entered at 9:17.
