“No.”
“You need to provide your driver’s license.”
“No.”
“Okay.”
The woman looked suspiciously at Lisa.
“What does okay mean?”
“It means you’ve been asked.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“Ma’am, I’m going to give you another opportunity. Roll the window down, hand me your driver’s license, and we can deal with the traffic violations.”
“I’m not consenting to any searches.”
“No one asked to search your vehicle.”
“I’m stating for the record that I do not consent.”
Nathan nodded.
“Noted.”
“And I don’t consent to you touching my property.”
“Noted.”
“And I don’t consent to detention.”
Nathan shook his head.
“You don’t get to choose whether you consent to a lawful traffic detention.”
“There you go.”
“Go where?”
“Admitting you’re detaining me.”
“I told you it was a traffic stop.”
“You never said I was detained.”
Nathan stared at her.
Lisa turned her head to hide a brief smile.
The woman pointed at Nathan through the glass.
“You’re contradicting yourself.”
“No, ma’am.”
“What’s your supervisor’s name?”
Nathan answered.
“I want him here.”
“He’s not coming out simply because you demand a supervisor.”
“Then call him.”
“No.”
Her expression hardened.
“Call your supervisor.”
Nathan ignored the order.
“Driver’s license.”
“I asked for your supervisor.”
“And I asked for your driver’s license.”
“You work for me.”
Nathan’s expression changed slightly.
“No, ma’am.”
“My taxes pay your salary.”
“So do mine.”
“That means you work for the public.”
“I serve the public.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
“You’re a public servant.”
“Yes.”
“Therefore you work for me.”
Nathan shook his head.
“That isn’t how public service works.”
The woman looked into her phone again.
“Did everyone hear that? A public servant saying he doesn’t work for the public.”
Nathan stepped away.
Lisa followed him.
“What do you want to do?”
“We’ve given her enough.”
“You going to order her out?”
Nathan nodded.
“She’s already been ordered once.”
Lisa glanced at the reinforced side window.
“Think she’ll open?”
“No.”
Nathan keyed his radio again.
“Dispatch, confirm supervisor notified. Also start tow standby.”
The woman heard him.
“Why are you calling a tow truck?”
Nathan approached again.
“Because if you continue refusing lawful commands, you may be arrested and the vehicle will need to be handled.”
Her eyes widened.
“For what?”
“Obstruction at minimum.”
