“I’ll speak with you in a moment.”

“No. You’re the supervisor.”

“I know.”

“You need to listen.”

“I will.”

“He broke my window.”

“I can see that.”

“For no reason.”

Grant looked at Nathan.

Nathan gave a concise summary.

Traffic violations.

Refusal to roll the window down.

Refusal to provide identification.

Repeated lawful orders.

Repeated warnings.

Forced entry.

Resistance.

Grant nodded.

The woman laughed.

“That’s not what happened.”

Grant turned toward her.

“Do you have a driver’s license?”

“Yes.”

“Did you give it to him?”

“No, because I didn’t have to.”

Grant nodded once.

“That’s incorrect.”

The woman stared at him.

“No, it’s not.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“You’re backing him because he’s your officer.”

“I’m telling you what the law requires.”

“You haven’t even investigated.”

Grant pointed toward Nathan’s body camera.

“I will review the footage.”

“My footage is better.”

“We can review that too.”

“You’re all going to be sued.”

Grant shrugged slightly.

“That’s your right.”

The same answer again.

The woman hated it.

She wanted them frightened by the word lawsuit.

Instead, every officer treated it like a weather forecast.

Possible rain tomorrow.

Possible lawsuit next month.

Not relevant to the current moment.

Grant looked toward the SUV.

“Who owns the vehicle?”

“I do.”

“Registration?”

“In the glove box.”

“Insurance?”

“Also there.”

“License?”

The woman looked toward her purse.

“In my bag.”

Grant stared at her.

“So you had it?”

“Of course I had it.”

“And you simply refused to provide it?”

“I exercised my rights.”

Grant sighed.

“No.”

She glared at him.

“You’re just another bully.”

Grant nodded toward the patrol car.

“Let’s get her secured.”

Nathan guided her toward his cruiser.

She stopped.

“Where are you taking me?”

“Station first.”

“I want medical attention.”

Nathan looked at her.

“For what?”

“Glass.”
