Should you tie your hair up or leave it down while sleeping to avoid hair loss
Hair and teeth are often considered reflections of a person’s appearance. For women especially, hair-related concerns receive a great deal of attention. Many people focus on moisturizing their hair, but not everyone knows whether it is better to tie their hair up or leave it loose when sleeping.
Our sleeping time is quite long, usually around 7–8 hours per night. Therefore, taking care of your hair while sleeping is extremely important. So, should you tie your hair or leave it loose when you go to bed?
In fact, both tying your hair and leaving it loose during sleep have certain drawbacks.
Disadvantages of tying your hair while sleeping
If you choose to tie your hair when sleeping, your hair follicles may be damaged. As you turn over during sleep, your body can press on your hair, creating friction and increasing tension at the roots, which can make hair more prone to breakage and hair loss.
Tying your hair tightly also means that the scalp is under constant pressure throughout the night. This can affect blood circulation and may even lead to nerve pain or headaches.
Disadvantages of leaving your hair loose while sleeping
Leaving your hair loose while sleeping can also have negative effects. The biggest issue is that hair is more likely to become tangled, especially for people who move around a lot during sleep. Friction between the hair and the pillow can cause tangling, particularly for those with long hair. This friction leads to moisture loss, making hair dry, frizzy, and more likely to shed.
Sleeping with loose hair also increases the risk of acne because the hair comes into more direct contact with facial skin. Hair often contains hair-care products as well as natural oils, bacteria, and dirt. When these substances touch the skin, they can clog pores, irritate the skin, and cause acne-related problems. Long hair can also contribute to back acne.
How should you wear your hair when sleeping?
The best option is to wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf while sleeping. This helps retain moisture, reduces friction between your hair and the pillow, and prevents hair from coming into contact with the skin. As a result, hair breakage and frizz are reduced, and the skin is better protected from acne.
You should also dry your hair completely before going to bed. Sleeping with wet hair not only increases the risk of catching a cold but also makes hair more vulnerable to breakage and damage to the hair follicles.
Additionally, choose pillows with silk or satin pillowcases so that hair can glide smoothly across the surface, reducing friction and minimizing hair breakage.
Finally, indoor humidity also affects hair health. In dry environments, hair tends to become dry, frizzy, and more tangled. Maintaining a stable level of humidity in the room helps keep hair in its best condition, and moderate humidity is also beneficial for the skin.
