His left arm would not go back. The shoulder had done something when he hit the hood, and the arm would only lift partway, shaking. "I can't, my shoulder, I think it's—"

"Stop resisting!"

"I'm not—"

And then, from somewhere behind him, a voice he did not at first recognize, because he had only ever heard it soft and polite and saying Yes sir, Mr. Ashby, thank you, Mr. Ashby, cracked across the side lot loud enough to bounce off the brick:

"Officer, stop! He owns the vehicle!"

Teo would not remember deciding to run.

He would remember the sound. He had been handing the sequined woman her ticket when the sound came around the corner of the building, that enormous hollow boom of a body hitting a car, and every valet who has ever worked a night shift knows the sounds cars make and this was not one of them. He had looked up. Through the bars of the side-lot fence he had seen the back of a police uniform and, pinned under it, a black tuxedo jacket against green-black paint, and he had thought, with a clarity that felt like ice water, Hook fourteen.

Then he was at the gate, and he was shouting.

Every rule he had was screaming at him. Never get arrested. Not for standing too close to somebody else's fight. He could see Ruth Halvorsen's tired face. He could see the case portal, No hearing scheduled, and the box in the corner of it he had never let himself imagine filled in with a different word. He could see the flight back to Toncontín and the men waiting outside the arrivals hall, who had long memories and had buried his brother for less. All of it went through him in less than a second, and none of it stopped his mouth.

"He owns it! I gave him the key! I'm the valet, I gave him his own key, he owns the car!"
