"I know. I've been asking around. He's in the Justice Center. They're holding him on the obstruction charge, same as you, but he hasn't seen a magistrate yet. And Julian—" She hesitated. "I'm hearing from one of the deputies that he might have immigration issues."

Julian closed his eyes. He remembered, now, a thing he had half noticed the last time he'd parked at the Marlowe, in August. Teo had been studying something on his phone when Julian walked up, and he had put it away fast, guiltily, the way young people do. Julian had glimpsed the screen for a second. A government website, blue and white. He had assumed it was a student loan.

"Whatever it costs," he said. "Whatever he needs. A bond, a lawyer, an immigration lawyer, I don't care. I'll pay it."

"It may not be about money."

"Then find out what it is about. And Delphine?"

"Yes."

"Don't let them get my car fixed. Don't let the insurance company touch it. Don't let anybody wash it. I want it exactly the way it is."

"Why?"

He looked down at Lena in the bassinet, then out at the river.

"Because a building remembers," he said. "Every load it ever carried, it remembers, if you know how to read it. And so does a car."
