She said. "Ma'am." "Oh God." "Ma'am, talk to me." "Marlon Hayes."
Victoria said. "Nia said the lawyer." "The best criminal defense attorney in the state of Illinois." Victoria's voice had gone hollow. "Nia."
"Who sits on the Whitmore compensation committee?" Nia Fontaine's mouth opened. "Marlon Hayes sits on the compensation committee." she said. "Who brought him onto the board?"
"Harlan brought him." "When?" "Four years ago." Nia whispered. "Four years ago in June."
Marcus said. "Three months after." Victoria put a hand on the roof of a car to stay upright. "I called that man at 4:20 in the morning." she said.
"I told him everything. Everything, Nia. Route 31, the escalade, the trees, all of it. I handed a man the single worst thing in my life at 4:20 in the morning because I was 30 years old and terrified and he was the best. And 90 days later, Harlan Voss walked him onto my board and I thought she was laughing horribly.
I thought Harlan was doing me a favor. I thought I was winning. I sat in that meeting and I voted yes. He's had it the whole time, Marcus said. He's had it the whole time.
4 years. 4 years. Victoria looked up. That's why I never lose a vote I need. That's why he's never once pushed me on anything that mattered until this quarter.
He wasn't beaten. He was holding it. He was holding it until it was worth something. And now the merger makes it worth something, Nia said. Now the merger makes it worth $11 billion, Victoria said.
At 9:51, Marcus Carter said the sentence that changed the direction of everything. Then Julian didn't erase my file to protect himself. The two women looked at him. Think about it, Marcus said. He was moving now, pacing his ruined hand curled against his chest, and his voice had a specific fast clarity of a man standing inside a machine that has finally started making sense.
Julian's an idiot with a badge. Julian doesn't read a federal diligence request. Julian doesn't know what a diligence request is. Julian's at a party. Julian's in Aspen.
Somebody had to tell him. Marcus. Somebody had to sit that man down and say, Julian, there's a problem. There's a maintenance guy in the building with your night in his file, and if the Halberd people find him, you go to prison. He turned around.
Somebody scared him into that office at 2:00 in the morning. Harlan, Nia breathed. Harlan Voss walked a scared drunk into his sister's office and handed him a keyboard. Marcus said, because a deletion under her login is worth more than a deletion under anybody's. Victoria said, it's not just a deletion.
Woah, woah, Marcus. She had gone completely white. It's not just a deletion. Do you understand what that is? Under my login from my machine, that's not an HR mistake.
That's obstruction. That's obstruction of a federal diligence process on a defense contract. That's not a firing. That's a referral. The parking lot got very quiet.
"He's not taking your chair," Marcus said slowly. "No. He's taking your freedom. He's taking everything," Victoria said. "He's got a lawyer on the board who can testify to a 4-year-old conversation, and he's got an access log with my name on it, and he's got a motive, which is you, which he built last night with a storm and a clipboard, and a kid named Trevor.
And on Monday at 10:00 a. m., a woman from legal slides a piece of paper across a table, and it doesn't matter what's on it, because by then it's a story, and I've been telling you since 2:00 in the morning, Marcus, you only get one story." Marcus Carter stood in the rain. Then he said, "How much?" "What?" "The number they're going to offer me.
Reeves said it's more money than I've ever seen." "How much?" Nia said Marcus. "How much?" "If I were Harlan," Nia said quietly, "I'd say 600,000."
Marcus nodded slowly. "600,000 dollars," he said. "To sign a paper that says I slept with my boss. Yes. That's Lily's college.
That's the house. That's the mortgage gone. That's her whole life paid for done, and I never have to crawl under another building again." "Marcus," Victoria said, and her voice was very small. "Take it."
Both of them turned to look at her. "What?" Nia said. "Take it." Victoria Whitmore was standing in a parking lot with her hair flat against her skull and her face ruined and she had never in her life sounded more certain.
Marcus, take the money. Sign the paper. Say whatever they want you to say about me. Say I seduced you. Say I coerced you.
Say I promised you a promotion. Say all of it and take the $600,000 and go home and give your daughter a life. Vic, Nia shut up. She did not look away from him. I owe him four years and a wife and a job he thinks he earned.
This is the only thing I have left that's worth anything and it's not even mine. It's just my head and my head is worth $600,000 to Harlan Voss. So let him buy it. Let him buy it and give it to that little girl. Marcus stared at her.
You're serious, he said. I have never been more serious. You'd go to prison. Probably not. Probably I'd just be finished.
She almost smiled. And Marcus, I have been finished before. I was finished at 26 with $11,000 and a laptop. It's survivable. Prison's survivable.
But you don't get to un-lose a childhood. Lily gets one. That's the only clock in this entire situation that can't be reset. And Julian? Victoria said nothing.
And Julian? Marcus said again. Julian would walk, she said. Say it like it's true. Julian would walk.
Victoria said. Julian would walk and he'd be in Aspen by March and he'd never think about your wife's name for one second for the rest of his life. And in 11 years, he'd tell the story at a party as something that happened to him. Marcus Carter looked at her for a very long time. Then he said, "No."
Marcus. No. He shook his head. No, ma'am. You don't get to do that.
Do what? That. He pointed at her with his bloody hand. That right there. That's the same move.
That's the exact same move you made 4 years ago at 4:20 in the morning. You looked at a bad situation and you found the version where you carry it and you decided for everybody and you didn't ask and you called it mercy. Victoria's mouth opened. You did it in March, Marcus said, and you did it in February when you buried the override to protect my job and you did it last night in that lobby with the room and you're doing it right now in a parking lot. And every single time you do it, you take one more thing off my table without asking me and then you tell me it's a gift.
Marcus, I am trying to give you $600,000. You're trying to pay me again. It echoed off the lodge. That's twice, Marcus said, and his voice went down to almost nothing which was worse. That's twice you've tried to pay for my wife.
