Bullies Target New Black Cheerleader, Unaware Her Father Is A Navy Seal
Vicky. Vicky, oh God, he was at the house. Victoria said, "What house?" "Your apartment." Julian's hands had started to shake.
March 10th, the morning after. When I came to you at 4:00 and I sat on your kitchen floor and I told you, Vicky, when I left, when you put me in the car for Hayes' office, there was a man in the lobby of your building and he said good morning to me by name. The rain came down. He said, "Good morning, Mr. Whitmore, rough night?"
And I was still drunk and I thought he was a doorman. Julian was staring at Dale Reeves. That's him. That's the face. That's him.
At 10:22 in the morning, Dale Reeves turned around and started walking toward the lodge and Marcus Carter said, "Dale." He kept walking. "Dale." "I'm not This is insane. I'm not standing here while a maintenance man Dale."
Reeves stopped on the second step. "You were in her lobby," Marcus said, "at 4:30 in the morning on March 10th 4 years ago. Why?" "I don't remember every Why?" "Because Harlan sent me."
Reeves shouted it and then he heard himself and his face collapsed so completely that Nia actually looked away. "Because Because he called me at 4:00 and said, 'Get to her building and see who comes out' and I did it and I told him a name and that's it. That is it. I told him a name and a time and he gave me a directorship and I never asked Victoria. I swear to God, I never asked.
I didn't want to know." "You've known for 4 years," Victoria said. "I knew a name." "You've known for 4 years that my brother came to my apartment at 4:00 in the morning on the night a woman died on Route 31 and you have sat in my building and you have taken my money and you have looked at that man." She pointed at Marcus and her arm was shaking.
Every day for 4 years and made jokes about the basement. Dale Reeves opened his mouth and nothing came out. Say it. Marcus said. I didn't know about your wife.
Say the rest. I didn't know, Carter. I swear to God I never connected. I never put it. It was a name and a time.
It was a favor. Do you understand what it's like to owe Harlan boss a February. Marcus said. Reeves stopped dead. You didn't flinch at February.
Marcus said. This morning in that closet with the printer. I said February and you got confused. I've been chewing on that for 4 hours. You didn't do the file.
No. You didn't. No. Reeves' voice broke. No, I didn't.
I've never been on that floor at night in my life. I don't have the Carter. I couldn't delete a contact off my phone. I have an assistant who does my email. And Marcus Carter believed him.
That was the horror of it. He stood there in the rain and looked at the man he had wanted to destroy for 4 years. The man who had said considering by a fireplace and he understood with a terrible clarity that Dale Reeves was not the villain of anything. Dale Reeves was a mouth with a mortgage. Dale Reeves was what Marcus might have been if Marcus had been born with better teeth and worse character.
You're nothing. Marcus said. Carter. That's not an insult. Marcus' voice was almost kind and it was unbearable.
That's the finding. You're not a bad man, Dale. You're a man who never once asked a question and that's how it always works, isn't it? That's how any of it works. Nobody has to be evil.
Everybody just has to not ask. At 10:26, Nia Fontaine said Vic, the load override. Victoria turned. What? February 11th.
I pulled the Danforth package. The override had Reeves' signature on it. Nia's eyes had gone hard. Dale, did you override that load limit? Dale Reeves said, "What load limit?"
Marcus felt the world tilt for the fourth time that morning. "The scaffold," Nia said. February. The Danforth job. Somebody overrode the load limit in writing and it got Marcus blamed and it's got your name on it.
"I didn't override anything. I don't know what a load limit is." It's your signature. "Then it's my signature," Reeves shouted, "because I sign 40 things a day that Renata puts in front of me and I have never read one of them in 11 years and everybody in this company knows it. Everybody laughs about it."
And Victoria Whitmore said very quietly, "Who's Renata?" The lawn went silent. "My assistant," Reeves said. "Who hired her?" Reeves' mouth moved.
"Dale, who hired her?" "Harlan's office sent her over." Nia Fontaine sat down on the wet steps. "He built it," she said. "Vic, he built the whole thing.
He put a signature machine in a director's chair and gave him an assistant. And then when he needed a scandal, he had a man who'd sign anything and a maintenance supervisor who'd take the blame because he had a kid. And then he deleted the maintenance supervisor's file so that when the Halberd people came looking, the only thing left in the system was a shape that looks exactly like Victoria Whitmore protecting her brother. That's 4 years of planning," Victoria said. "That's not planning," Marcus said.
They looked at him. "That's maintenance," he said. "Ma'am, that's maintenance. He didn't plan it. He kept it.
He kept a lawyer and he kept a mouth and he kept a signature machine, and he kept a name and a time from a lobby at 4:30 in the morning, and he oiled it once a year, and he waited for the day it was worth something. That's not a genius. That's a man with a wrench who never throws anything away. Marcus's voice went down. That's me, ma'am.
That's the same thing I do. That's exactly the same thing I do. At 10:31 in the morning, the satellite phone rang in Trevor's hand at the top of the steps. Trevor said, uh Miss Whitmore, it's for Mr. Carter.
Everything stopped. Say that again. Nia said. It's the guy asked for Marcus Carter. Marcus went up the steps and took the phone in his bloody hand.
This is Carter. Mr. Carter. The voice was old and pleasant and unhurried, and Marcus had never heard it before in his life and knew exactly who it was. Harlan Voss.
I hope I'm not interrupting. Marcus said nothing. I understand you've had an eventful morning. How'd you get this number? Mr.
Carter, I've been on the board of that lodge's parent company since 2008. Now, I'll be brief because I'm told there's a helicopter using up my afternoon. A small warm chuckle. $600,000. Marcus closed his eyes. I understand that number has already been shared with you by someone with a bigger mouth than a brain.
Voss said. So, let's not perform. $600,000 paid Monday and a statement you'll find is very mild. It doesn't call anyone a criminal. It says you felt pressure. That's all.
You felt pressure, which is true, isn't it? Mr. Voss, and here's the part your friends out there on that lawn haven't told you because they don't know it. Voss's voice did not change at all. Your daughter's name is Lily.
She's seven. She's at Fairmont Elementary, same school her mother taught at, which I've always found rather beautiful. And there's an account with $61,000 in it that you've never touched. Marcus stopped breathing. $61,000 is not college, Mr. Carter. $61,000 is a year and a half at a state school and then a very difficult conversation with a 19-year-old girl.
