Bullies Target New Black Cheerleader, Unaware Her Father Is A Navy Seal
He pulled the door shut. At 10:51 in the morning, Marcus Carter drove a large truck onto a gravel fire road with one working hand and no plan and behind him on a lawn, Victoria Whitmore stood in the rain and watched him go and Nia Fontaine said, "You're in love with him." "Nia, I'm not making a joke." "I know you're not." "Vic."
Nia's voice was raw. "You looked that man up every week for 4 years." Victoria Whitmore watched a truck disappear into the pines. "I know." She said.
The truck went 11 miles before the road tried to kill him. The wash had taken out the shoulder and Marcus felt the whole right side drop and he was in it before he had time to be afraid. Sideways gravel roaring under the floor pan and he did the only thing 19 years had taught him which was steer into it and not touch the brake and the truck came out of it at an angle and stopped 6 feet from a drop that had no bottom he could see. He sat there. His hands were shaking and he said out loud to nobody in a truck on a mountain, Denise.
That was all, just her name. Then he backed up and he drove. At 11:40 in the morning, he hit county highway pavement and his phone lit up with four bars for the first time in 20 hours and it rang in his hand before he could dial. It was Ada. Lily's grandmother, his mother-in-law.
Marcus? Her voice was wrong. Marcus, honey, don't panic. He pulled over so fast the truck slid. What?
Lily's fine. Lily's fine. She's right here. She's fine. Ada, what?
There was a man at the house, Ada said. The world went white at the edges. When? 20 minutes ago. He had a He said he was from your job.
He had a badge. He had a whole thing. He was very polite. He asked if you kept any work materials at home, any books, any papers. He said there was an audit.
Marcus could not speak. I told him you don't bring work home. Ada's voice hardened and Marcus remembered suddenly and completely that this woman had raised three kids on the west side and buried a daughter and did not scare. And then I told him I was going to call the police and he left and Marcus, I got his plate. I wrote down his plate.
Ada. I'm not stupid, baby. Marcus put his forehead on the steering wheel. Marcus, you still there? Yeah.
Marcus, what is this? And at 11:43 in the morning on the shoulder of a county highway with an hour and 20 minutes between him and a basement, Marcus Carter said, Ada, I need you to listen to me and I need you to not ask me why yet. Okay. Take Lily to your sisters in Hammond right now. Don't pack.
Don't stop. And Ada. What? There's a jar in her room, Marcus said, and his voice finally finally broke all the way. There's a jar with quarters in it.
Bring the jar. Ada Reyes did not ask why. That was the thing about Ada. She had been asking why her whole life, and she had learned exactly when it was a luxury. Hammond, she said.
The jar. Anything else? Her inhaler. Got it. Ada.
Marcus. A pause. Is somebody trying to hurt my grand baby? He looked out the windshield at a county highway in the rain. No, he said.
Somebody's trying to buy her. Ada Reyes was quiet for 1 second. Then you go do what you're doing, she said, and you don't call me back until it's done. She hung up. At 11:52 in the morning, Marcus Carter dialed a number he had never once dialed in 4 years.
Victoria picked up on the first ring. Marcus? They went to my house. The sound she made was not a word. 20 minutes ago, a man with a badge and a story about an audit asking my dead wife's mother if I keep any books or papers at home.
Marcus. Ma'am, they know about the ledger. That's not possible. It's Saturday morning, and a man drove to a house in Bronsonville and asked about books and papers. His voice was flat and fast.
That's not a guess. That's not fishing. Somebody said the word ledger out loud in a room this morning. Nobody knows about that book but the three of us, and it's been 3 hours. She stopped.
Marcus heard her stop. He heard it the way he heard a bearing start to go. Say it, he said. Trevor's satellite phone. What about it?
Marcus, we were standing in the parking lot. Victoria's voice had gone thin. We were standing in the parking lot at 9:50 and I said the word drawer out loud and you said sub level two northeast corner and there were 40 people behind a glass wall. They couldn't hear us. No, she said.
But Dale Reeves came out onto those steps 11 minutes later with his phone up in the air and I watched him do it and I thought he was checking for signal. Marcus closed his eyes. He was recording. He was recording or he was on a call with the line open and either way Harlan Voss has been listening to us since 9:00 this morning like it was a radio show. Ma'am?
I know. Ma'am, he heard the camera. The silence on that line went on so long Marcus checked the screen. Victoria. He heard the camera, she said.
At 11:55 Marcus Carter put a Lodge truck up to 85 miles an hour on a wet county highway with one working hand. How far are you? Victoria said. An hour 10. Make it 40.
Ma'am. Marcus, listen to me. Listen very carefully because I'm about to do something and I need you to not fight me on it for once in the last 20 hours. Her voice had changed. The CEO had come back into it all the way like a switch thrown in a substation.
There's a box in that sub level. 60 days of footage. And there is a man in Winnetka who found out about it 90 minutes ago and has a Saturday and a key card. He can't get into a maintenance loop. It's not on the network.
He doesn't need to get into it, Marcus. He needs to break it. He needs a water leak. He needs an electrical fault. He needs a contractor with a work order and a hammer and 11 minutes.
She was already moving. He could hear it. So, here's what happens now. Nia's calling the county road crew and telling them the CEO of Whitmore Technologies is going to sit in a lodge lobby until that road opens in front of 40 witnesses being seen. And I'm calling the one person on this earth who scares Harland Voss.
Who? Marlon Hayes. Marcus almost put the truck in a ditch. Ma'am, that's the man who sold you Maybe. Her voice did not shake.
Maybe he sold me. Or maybe he's a lawyer who took $700,000 and kept his mouth shut for 4 years exactly like you said. And Harland Voss has been letting me believe otherwise because a woman who can't trust anybody makes very bad decisions at 2:00 in the morning. That's a hell of a bet. Marcus, it's the only bet I've got left and I'm making it and I'm telling you before I make it instead of after.
A beat. That's new for me. I'd like some credit. And Marcus Carter doing 85 in the rain with a handful of stitches he hadn't gotten left. Noted, he said.
Marcus? Yes, ma'am. Don't die on that highway. At 12:41, Marcus Carter came off the ramp into the city and knew three blocks out that he was too late. There was a van at the loading dock of the Whitmore Tower, not a company van, a contractor's van, unmarked white, backed in at an angle, doors open, and Marcus knew every vendor that touched that building the way a man knows his own kitchen, and he had never seen that van in his life.
He did not pull into the dock. He drove past it. He went around the block and put the truck in a metered spot on Wacker like a man with nowhere to be. And he sat there for 11 seconds breathing. Then he called her.
