You did it with a house and now you're doing it with a signature. And I want you to hear me, ma'am, because I have never in my life said anything I meant more than this. I am not for sale, not to Harlan Voss and not to you. And the difference between the two of you is getting real thin from where I'm standing. Victoria Whitmore took that the way a wall takes a car.
Okay, she whispered. Okay. Okay. She nodded. She wiped her face.
She stood up straight and Marcus watched the CEO come back into her body 1 inch at a time and it was the most frightening thing he had seen all morning. Then what do you want, Marcus? Because in about 6 hours there's an inquiry and there's a road and there's a man in Winnetka with a lawyer and a log and 4 years of patience. So tell me, what do you want? And Marcus Carter said, I want the drawer.
Nia's head snapped up. The drawer, Victoria said. Sublevel two, northeast corner, metal desk third drawer down, a green ledger book with a rubber band around it." Marcus's voice had gone very steady. "Every door failure on the executive floor, every power event, every time that garbage badge panel failed open in my handwriting dated signed initialed going back four years because I don't trust their system and I never have.
Marcus, that's a maintenance log. That's not evidence." "Ma'am." He almost smiled and it was awful. "On February 11th at 1:58 in the morning, there was a power event on the executive floor.
I responded to it. And at 2:11, I logged that every door on that floor failed open including yours and I logged the reset at 2:34." Naya said, "Oh my god. My." Which means, Marcus said, "that at 2:13 in the morning, your office door was standing open and anybody in that building could walk in.
And there is a piece of paper in a basement in Chicago that says so in the handwriting of a man who wrote it 11 months before anybody had a reason to lie." Victoria Whitmore stopped breathing. "That's not proof Julian was in there." Marcus said. "That's not proof Harland sent him.
That's not proof of one single thing." "Then what is it?" "It's a crack." Marcus said. "It's reasonable doubt with a date on it.
It's the one document in this entire company that Harland Voss has never thought about for one second because it's in a basement, because a maintenance guy wrote it, and men like Harland Voss have never once in their lives wondered what the maintenance guy writes down." Naya was already moving. "The fire road." "The fire road." "Marcus, the road's closed.
The county road's closed. The fire road's gravel and it's 22 miles and it's ugly, and I've already walked the first 1,100 ft of it this morning while you two were at breakfast. He was walking. There's a lodge truck with plates and a full tank. Trevor's got the keys, and Trevor's 23, and Trevor will absolutely give them to me because Trevor thinks I saved his job last night, which I did.
And then what? Victoria said. He stopped. Marcus, say you get down the mountain. Say you get to that drawer.
It's Saturday. The inquiry's Monday. You'd be walking into a building where every camera works, carrying a book that proves a door was open against a man who has had 4 years to think about this. What is your plan? And Marcus Carter turned around and said the truest thing he had ever said to her.
Ma'am, I don't have a plan. I've got a wife who's dead and a daughter with $11 in a jar and a brother of yours who watched me from the trees. His voice did not shake. I've been fixing things for 19 years. Nobody ever asked me for a plan.
They just asked me if it was broken. Nia said, "Is it broken?" Yeah. Marcus said. It's broken.
At 10:04 in the morning, they came around the corner of the lodge toward the lot where the trucks were, and Marcus Carter stopped so fast that Nia walked into his back. There was a helicopter on the lawn. The rotors were still turning. The county had the roads closed, and the mountain had no signal, and there was a helicopter sitting on the grass at Black Pine Lodge with the door open, and a man was climbing out of it in a coat that cost more than the truck. Victoria Whitmore made a sound Marcus had never heard from a human being.
Vic, Nia said. Vic, who is that? But Marcus already knew. He knew before the man straightened up. He knew from the way Victoria's whole body turned to stone beside him, and he knew from the four years of nothing in his chest suddenly filling with something so hot he could not see.
The man on the lawn had Victoria's eyes. "That's Julian." Marcus said. At 10:05 in this morning, Nia Fontaine put her hand flat on Marcus Carter's chest and said, "Don't." He did not move.
That was the frightening part. He did not lunge. He did not shout. He did not do one single thing a man is supposed to do and Nia would tell somebody years later that she had never been more afraid of anybody in her life than she was of Marcus Carter standing perfectly still on a wet lawn. "Marcus."
"I'm not going to touch him." "Say it again. I'm not going to touch him." Marcus said, "I'm going to listen to him." Julian Whitmore came across the grass with his hands in his coat pockets and his shoulders up around his ears and he was 41 years old and he walked like a boy who'd been called down to the principal's office and Marcus hated him so completely and so instantly that it felt almost like relief.
Four years of nothing had finally found a shape. "Vicky." "Don't." Victoria said. "Vicky, I need to talk to you.
You put a helicopter on a lawn." "There's a mudslide. There's no other." "You put a helicopter on a lawn. Julian in front of 40 employees at a company retreat on the weekend.
The board is opening an inquiry into me." Victoria's voice was so flat it barely carried. "There are 200 people who are going to know about this by dinner. Do you understand what you just did? Do you understand that you just put yourself in the same photograph as me?"
Julian's mouth opened and Marcus said quietly, "That's the point." Everybody looked at him. "That's the point." Marcus said again. "Ma'am, look at him.
Look at his face. He doesn't know why he's here. "I know why I'm here." Julian said. "No, you don't."
Marcus took one step. Just one. "Who told you to come?" "Nobody told me." "Who told you there was a problem at this lodge because you didn't read it in a newspaper.
There's no signal on this mountain. Somebody called you." Another step. "Who called you, Julian?" Julian Whitmore looked at his sister.
"Vicky, who is this?" And at 10:07 in the morning, Marcus Carter laughed out loud, and it was the worst sound on that mountain. "He doesn't know." Marcus said. "Ma'am, he doesn't know who I am."
"Julian." Victoria said. "Look at him." "What?" "Look at him.
Look at his face and tell me you don't know who he is." Julian looked. Marcus stood there and let himself be looked at, and it was the single hardest thing he had ever done. Harder than the funeral. Harder than telling a three-year-old that Mommy was not coming back because he had to stand there with his ruined hand and his wet shirt and let a man with a helicopter search his face for a memory.
And Marcus watched it arrive. He watched Julian Whitmore's eyes go from a stranger's face to a road in the rain 4 years back 11 feet away in the trees. Julian's coffee-colored skin went gray under it. His mouth came open. He took an actual step backward and his heel caught on the wet grass and he almost went down and Nia Fontaine made a small disgusted sound because she had seen a thousand men in a thousand boardrooms and she knew exactly what she was watching.
"Oh God." Julian said. Nobody helped him. "Oh God. Oh God, Vicky."
"Say his name." Victoria said. "Vicky." "You've had 4 years. Say his name.
I don't know his name. The wind took it across the lawn, and Marcus Carter said, "Marcus." Julian looked at him. "My name is Marcus Carter." Marcus said.
