Dingdong Avanzado and daughter Jayda talk about relationships, career longevity on 'Fast Talk with Boy Abunda'

For OPM fans of a certain generation, Dingdong Avanzado was one of the top artists of his generation. Since his debut in 1987 and his hit song “Ikaw Lamang,” Dingdong has had a longevity in the Filipino entertainment industry that most performers would envy.

Dingdong isn't just the consummate entertainer in his family either. He married fellow singer Jessa Zaragoza back in 2001, with the two of them being dubbed as the Philippines' Prince of Pop and the Philippines' Jukebox Queen.

Their marriage has resulted in the birth of their daughter, Jayda, who herself started her journey in the entertainment industry back in 2018 with the release of her EP, In My Room.

The pair were the latest guests on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda where they talked about Jayda's past relationship, career longevity, and the upcoming concert where father and daughter will be performing together.

Immediate hot seat

King of Talk Boy Abunda didn't waste any time with his guests, Dingdong Avanzado and his daughter Jayda. The celebrated host immediately brought up a previous interview with Darren Espanto where the It's Showtime host admitted to having had a relationship with her. Jayda revealed that she had not talked about it before with her father.

“To be honest though, I don't think I ever actually directly talked about it. Not yet. Siguro ngayon lang. Dito talaga natin mapaguusapan,” Jayda answered with a laugh. “But when it comes to my dad, sometimes I don't need to tell. Eventually, we talk about it as time passes.”

Not the first time

While this is the first time that Jayda is talking about her relationship with Darren with her father, she had previously reacted to Darren's revelation when she was a previous guest on Fast Talk.

At the time, Jayda responded: “Ito po ang masasabi ko,Tito Boy, totoo po na there was something romantic between us noong mga bata pa kami but it was something I look fondly back on. Ito lang ang masasabi ko, it was a mutual understanding po."

'She's more intimidating'

Dingdong Avazado was humbler when talked about his role in his daughter's relationships, saying that Jayda just being herself is already intimidating for boys to approach.

“Boys ang mas intimidated sa kanya. Sa umpisa, may attempt pero after a while, they have second thoughts or chicken out because she's got a good personality and a good head above her shoulders,” Dingdong explained. “I trust that she will choose well. Normal na you will see these boys and you will like each other. Ang sinasabi ko lang sa kanya is don't forget her responsibilities and priorities.”

Careers then and now

Dingdong Avanzado and Jayda also talked about the differences in pursuing an entertainment career during Dingdong's time compared to the career Jayda is pursuing now.

According to Jayda, the industry now is much more fast-paced with trends quickly coming and going.

“I would say that the turnover time in the music industry now, napakabilis. Kung ano man 'yung sikat nitong week na ito, baka iba next week. There's a constant fight for relevance,” she observed. “But I like to play with the hand that I'm dealt with and the resources I have. I believe in sticking to your guns and what's authentic to you. Napansin ko ang vina-value ng mga tao is authenticity.”

Dingdong, on the other hand, talked about how there weren't as many roads to fame back in his time compared to now.

“Ilan lang ang platforms noon. There was only TV, radyo. When you go through that, mas madali in that sense. Kapag pumasok ka na sa radyo, kapag pumasok ka na sa TV, everybody's tuned in there,” he recalled. “Now, ang daming pwedeng puntahan ng tao. Pwedeng sikat ka sa isang grupo, pero di ka kilala ng isang grupo sa society.”

Singing together

Of course, Boy Abunda didn't pass up the opportunity to make the father and daughter pair sing. The pair sang two song snippets on the show.

Family affair

Dingdong Avanzado and Jayda, as well as Jessa Zaragoza, will be performing on July 19 at The Theatre at Solaire in the concert “The Original Prince of Pinoy Pop.” Other performers at the concert include Pablo from SB19, JM de la Cerna and Marielle Montellano, Randy Santiago, Khimo, and LA Santos.

Celebrity A'tins

SB19's Pablo being a guest performer should come as no surprise, as the Avanzado family are celebrity fans, with Dingdong Avanzado, Jessa Zaragoza, and Jayda even attending an SB19 concert in the United States.
