8 ways to get rid of motion sickness instantly without medicine: Travel long distances and still be healthy
To reduce nausea and discomfort during trips, try applying some of the following methods to prevent motion sickness.
Preventing Motion Sickness with Orange, Tangerine, and Lemon Peels
People who often suffer from motion sickness tend to feel uncomfortable with the smell of air conditioning or gasoline in the car. Therefore, using fruits with essential oils can help alleviate this discomfort, bring relaxation, and reduce motion sickness.
About an hour before getting in the car, peel a tangerine and keep the peel. Fold the peel and hold it up to your nose to inhale. Gently squeeze it to release the essential oils from the peel. The pleasant fragrance will help you feel more comfortable. You can do this while on the car as well. You can apply the same method with orange or lemon peels.
Preventing Motion Sickness with Bread
Bread is an effective remedy for motion sickness. Before your trip, prepare a fresh loaf of bread. If you start feeling sick, take a piece of bread to smell.
Eating bread also helps prevent motion sickness. When you eat bread, your pancreas will release trypsin. This enzyme interacts with the amino acids in the bread, helping to calm your nerves.
Preventing Motion Sickness with Ginger Water
Ginger is known to alleviate nausea and can help reduce discomfort caused by motion sickness. You can drink a bit of ginger water about 30 minutes before departure.
Additionally, you can suck on a ginger candy to reduce nausea, though this is not as effective as drinking ginger water.
Preventing Motion Sickness with Betel Leaves
You can take 1-2 betel leaves with you during your trip. Occasionally take the betel leaves out to smell them to overpower the gasoline odor that may make you feel uncomfortable or tired.
About 15 minutes before getting on the car, take 3-4 fresh betel leaves, crush them, and place them on your chest, using a cloth or gauze to cover it and secure it with tape. The betel leaves help warm the chest area, reducing discomfort and preventing nausea during the trip.
Preventing Motion Sickness: Sit in the Front Seat
If you're prone to motion sickness, sit in the front seats, keeping your head stable to reduce discomfort. Those who frequently get motion sickness often choose to sit next to the driver, as this area experiences less vibration than the middle or rear seats.
If traveling by train, sit on the train's deck, toward the rear, away from the fuel smells. During the trip, focus your gaze far ahead or at the front, avoiding looking down at the ground or the front of the train.
Preventing Motion Sickness: Look Out the Window
While traveling, try looking out the window, towards the horizon. This helps your brain recalibrate its sense of balance, providing additional movement perception and reducing motion sickness.
Preventing Motion Sickness with the Nei Guan Pressure Point
To reduce motion sickness, press the Nei Guan pressure point (located on the wrist, just above the crease of the wrist, between the middle finger and the tendon of the hand). This method is often used by Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners.
Pressing the Nei Guan and massaging are effective methods to combat motion sickness, and many people use them. To do this, use your fingers to massage and press the pressure points on the wrist joint or the tendon, also known as Nei Guan and He Gu points. This helps reduce symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, stomach pain, and headaches.
To locate the Nei Guan point, place three fingers (index, middle, and ring fingers) on your left wrist, starting from the fold. The Nei Guan point will be under your index finger. Hold and press this point for 4-5 seconds to alleviate motion sickness.
The He Gu point is located at the point where the thumb and index finger meet. When you close your thumb and index finger, a groove forms, and the end of this groove is where the He Gu point is located. Once found, press and hold the point for 2 seconds, then release. Repeat this for 1-3 minutes.
Avoid These Foods Before Traveling
-
Lychee, Egg Yolk, Soy Milk: Lychee has a high sugar content, and under the influence of enzymes in the body, the sugar turns into a substance with an alcohol-like smell, which can make you feel "dizzy."
-
Similarly, egg yolks and soy milk can have a similar effect.
-
Additionally, eating foods like beer-soaked crab or foods with alcohol before traveling can also cause discomfort and nausea.
-
Greasy Food: Before traveling, avoid eating too much. After eating, blood concentrates in the digestive system, and it doesn't circulate to the brain or limbs, reducing nervous system function and leading to nausea during the trip.
-
Eating too many oily foods will make the stomach hard to digest, cause bloating, and result in nausea and discomfort during the journey.
-
Smelly Foods: Foods with strong odors like durian, beer, and wine will make you feel even more nauseous when you get into a car. Therefore, if you're preparing for a long trip, it's best to avoid smelly foods.
-
Carbonated Drinks, Bubble Tea: Carbonated drinks like soda will cause bloating, discomfort, and stomach pain, leading to nausea. Avoid them completely before and during your trip.
Bubble tea contains sugar, cream, and milk, which can cause bloating and discomfort, triggering nausea.
