Maya Chen sat in the back row of the big concert hall. Her hands moved quietly on her lap as the piano music filled the room. She could not see the stage, but she could hear every single note that came from the beautiful grand piano.
Maya was 17 years old and had been blind since she was born. The music was so beautiful that it made her heart feel warm. She knew this piece very well; it was one of her favorite songs to listen to. Maya had listened to the same piece many times on her old radio at home. But hearing it live in this fancy concert hall was something very special.
Maya had come to this concert with her older brother, Sam. He was 22 years old and worked at a small store to help their family. Their parents did not have much money, but Sam had saved for two months to buy these tickets for Maya's birthday. He knew how much she loved music.
"The pianist is really good," Sam whispered to Maya during a quiet part of the song.
Maya nodded but did not say anything. She was too busy listening. Her ears could pick up sounds that most people could not hear. She could tell that the pianist was using the soft pedal now. She could hear the way his fingers touched the keys—sometimes gentle and sometimes strong. Maya had learned to understand music in a way that was different from other people.
When Maya was a little girl, her mother used to play simple songs on an old keyboard they had at home. Maya would sit next to her and try to copy the sounds. Her mother was not a real musician, but she knew some basic songs. Maya learned quickly, and soon she was playing better than her mother.
The family did not have money to buy a real piano or pay for music lessons. But Maya did not give up on her dream of learning to play. When she was 12 years old, she found out that the community center near her house had an old upright piano. The piano was not in very good condition, but it still worked. Maya started going to the community center every day after school.
The lady who worked there, Mrs. Kim, was very kind. She let Maya use the piano for free. At first, Maya could only play simple songs that her mother had taught her, but she wanted to learn more difficult music. Maya taught herself to play by listening to music on the radio and trying to copy it on the piano. It was very hard work. Sometimes she would spend hours trying to learn just one small part of a song. Her fingers would get tired, and sometimes they hurt. But Maya never stopped practicing.
Other kids at school thought Maya was strange. They did not understand why she spent so much time at the community center playing piano. Some of them made fun of her. They said things like, "Why do you try to play music when you cannot even see the keys?"
Maya felt sad when they said these things, but she did not let them stop her.
