Maya's parents were worried about her. They loved her very much, but they thought her dream of becoming a pianist was not realistic. Maya's father worked at a factory and her mother cleaned offices at night. They knew that becoming a professional musician was very expensive and difficult. They wanted Maya to learn skills that would help her get a regular job.
"Maya, you are very smart," her father would say. "You could learn to work with computers or answer phones at an office. Those are good jobs for people who cannot see."
But Maya did not want to give up her dream. Music was the most important thing in her life. When she played piano, she felt happy and free. She felt like she could do anything.
As Maya got older, she got better at playing piano. She learned to play classical music, jazz, and even some popular songs. Her favorite was classical music because it was the most challenging and beautiful. Maya dreamed of one day playing in a big concert hall like the one she was sitting in now.
The music in the concert hall was getting louder and more exciting. Maya could feel the power of the sound all around her. She imagined herself sitting at that grand piano on the stage. She could almost feel the smooth keys under her fingers. She could imagine the audience listening to her play.
Maya knew that most people thought her dream was impossible. They thought that blind people could not become famous pianists. The concert was ending now. The pianist played the final notes and the audience clapped very loudly. Maya clapped too, with tears in her eyes. The music had been so beautiful that it made her feel like her heart was going to burst with happiness and sadness at the same time.
"That was amazing," Sam said to Maya as people started to leave their seats.
"Yes, it was perfect," Maya replied. "I want to play like that someday."

As they walked toward the exit, Maya listened to the other people talking about the concert. Everyone was saying how wonderful the pianist had been.
