Then Maya heard footsteps approaching. She turned toward the sound and realized that Victor Holbrook was walking toward her. Maya's heart started beating fast again. She was not sure what he was going to say to her this time.
"Maya," Victor said quietly, "may I speak with you privately for a moment?"
Maya nodded nervously and followed Victor to a quiet corner of the backstage area. She prepared herself for more criticism or cruel comments about her performance. But when Victor spoke, his voice was completely different from what Maya remembered. Instead of being arrogant and mean, he sounded humble and sincere.
"Maya, I owe you a very sincere apology," Victor said. "What I said to you several months ago was completely wrong and inexcusably cruel. I was ignorant and prejudiced, and I am deeply ashamed of my behavior."
Maya was so surprised that she could not think of anything to say.
"Your performance tonight was one of the most beautiful and moving musical experiences of my entire career," Victor continued. "You did not just play the notes correctly. You brought that music to life in a way that very few pianists ever achieve. You have a gift that is truly extraordinary."
Maya finally found her voice. "Thank you," she said quietly. "That means a lot to me."
"I would be honored if you would consider letting me be your mentor," Victor said. "I know some of the best music teachers and programs in the world. I would like to help you develop your talent and pursue a professional career in music, if that is what you want."
Maya could hardly believe what she was hearing. The man who had once told her that her dreams were impossible was now offering to help her achieve them.
"I would like that very much," Maya said with a smile.
Victor smiled too, and Maya could hear the sincerity in his voice when he spoke again. "Maya, I want you to know that what happened tonight will change many people's minds about what is possible. You have not just proven that blind people can play classical music professionally. You have shown everyone that true musical talent comes from the heart, not from what advantages you have or do not have."
