College Student Killed by Her Ex in Parking Lot Before He Calls 911, Kills Himself

A family in Michigan is grieving the death of 20-year-old Sarah Carroll, who was one of two victims in what police are calling a murder-suicide.

According to a statement from the City of Westland Police Department to PEOPLE, Carroll was discovered deceased after Westland, Michigan, authorities received a report of a shooting on Saturday, August 30.

Although the police did not publicly name the deceased, the victim's family has confirmed her identity as Sarah Carroll to several news outlets, including WXYZ, FOX 2, and Local 4.

Authorities say the shooter placed a 911 call, admitting to having shot his ex-girlfriend, as reported by the Westland Community News.

The man subsequently shot and killed himself, and his body was found next to Carroll's, police said. PEOPLE's request to confirm this information with the police was not answered.

A witness told the Westland Community News that their son, who was at the apartment complex that Saturday night, saw Carroll confront her ex-boyfriend just before he pulled out a shotgun, shot her, and then turned the weapon on himself.

Carroll's family confirmed the man was her former boyfriend and stated that he had been stalking her for the past two months, according to reports from FOX 2, WXYZ, and Local 4.

Her mother, Jennifer Thomas, told the outlets that Sarah was in the process of seeking a protection order against him.

Sarah, a pre-physician assistant student, is being remembered as a driven and humorous individual, Local 4 reported.

“She was loved by everyone. Everyone she met,” her father, James Carroll, told the outlet. “She was wonderful. I’m going to miss my baby.”

Jennifer remembered Sarah as being vibrant and full of life. “She was alive, she was funny, she was smart, she had everything going for her,” she told the outlet.

A GoFundMe campaign has been organized to help with her funeral expenses.

The fundraiser's description reads, "Sarah was so full of life—smart, brave, strong, and with a smile that lit up every room she entered. She was only just beginning her journey, and losing her at such a young age is something no family should ever have to go through."
