Woman who had no idea she was pregnant gives birth in RV at Burning Man

A woman who was unaware of her pregnancy gave birth to her first child at the Burning Man festival with the help of fellow attendees.

Thirty-seven-year-old Kayla Thompson and her husband Kasey certainly returned from the Burning Man festival with more than just good memories. The Salt Lake City couple was sleeping in their RV when Kayla was awakened by a sharp pain. Minutes later, she gave birth to their first child, a baby girl weighing 3 lbs., 9 oz.

Kayla had no idea she was even pregnant. In an interview with The New York Times, the new mother explained that she "didn't have any symptoms" of pregnancy before the unexpected birth. "Even the nurses at the hospital were like, 'You don’t look like you were pregnant at all,'" she said.

After the baby was born, Kasey ran for help. "I was yelling for anyone to come help us," he told the newspaper.

Fortunately, a neonatal nurse, a pediatric doctor, and an OBGYN—who was wearing only his underwear—were also at the festival and quickly came to their aid. They then assisted Kayla in safely delivering the placenta. Woman who had no idea she was pregnant gives birth in RV at Burning Man

Burning Man medical staff soon arrived to provide additional assistance, and the new family of three was transported to a hospital in Reno, Nevada. However, when the air ambulance arrived, the couple was informed that there was only room to airlift the baby to the hospital. Kasey was then faced with what he called the "hardest decision of his life," as he was forced to choose between making sure their child was safely on the helicopter or immediately leaving with his wife. Ultimately, he chose to ride to the hospital with his wife, and when they arrived four hours later, they were greeted by their healthy baby girl. "She was safe and sound, and I was so thrilled," Kasey said. He added that he is thankful for the spirit of community at Burning Man that helped him and his wife in their time of need. "That’s what that community is about. [The Burners] will always have such a special place in my heart.”

Kasey's family has since created a GoFundMe page for the couple, which can be found here.

The page explains: "Since this is their first child and the pregnancy was completely unexpected, my brother and his wife don’t have anything prepared... On top of that, the unexpected circumstances have created a heavy financial burden: NICU care (with no release date yet), medical bills, and travel and lodging expenses while they are far from home. Anything you are able to give—no matter how big or small—will help this new little family get started on the right foot.”
