"Your deputy opened it after I refused consent."

Boone glanced at Mercer. Mercer said nothing.

Boone continued. "Do you have a warrant?"

Maya remained quiet.

"What records have you already copied?"

No answer.

"Have you interviewed anyone inside this department?"

Maya looked toward the file on the desk. "You keep asking what the FBI knows."

Boone leaned back. "That is exactly what I am asking."

"You should be asking what you have already admitted."

Mercer shifted near the door. Boone's expression tightened. "What have we admitted?"

Maya looked toward him. "You brought me to a private storage yard after your deputy told dispatch the stop was over."

Boone said nothing.

"You kept me in handcuffs without booking me. You brought my motorcycle to a location that is not listed as county impound. You are holding federal credentials you took from a bag after I refused to search."

Mercer looked at Boone.

Maya continued. "And now you are asking how much evidence exists before deciding what story you want to tell."

Boone closed the file. "You think saying all that changes your situation?"

"No."

"Then why say it?"

"Because you asked what you already admitted."

Boone stood. For several seconds, he looked at Maya without speaking. Then he turned toward Mercer. "Outside."

They stepped into the hallway. Noah remained there. Boone pointed at him. "You, too."

The three men moved into the main office. Boone spoke quietly. "First, the roadside contact gets rewritten."

Noah immediately objected. "You cannot rewrite what happened."

Boone looked at him. "I can correct an incomplete report."

"There is no report yet."

"Then that makes it easier."

Mercer listened closely. Boone continued. "The Harley never enters regular county custody. We keep it here until we know what we are dealing with."

Noah shook his head. "That is not legal."

Boone ignored him. "Photographs show the condition at the time of seizure."

Mercer looked toward the warehouse. "After I damaged it."

Boone gave him a hard look. "Do not say that again."

Mercer stopped speaking.
