"There is no booking record for Maya Williams in Ashford County."
Ruth felt her concern increase. "I watched them take her."
"I believe you."
"The police have no record of it?"
"Not one that we can find."
Ruth sat back in her chair. "That's why that man wanted my video."
Laura kept her response measured. "We don't know that yet."
"I do."
Laura allowed a short silence before speaking again. "Mrs. Walker, I'm going to send you instructions for preserving the original file. Follow them exactly. Don't edit it, rename it, or delete anything."
"I won't."
"And if anyone contacts you again, write down the number and what they say."
Ruth picked up her pen. "I can do that."
Laura said, "One more thing: I'm going to review your video carefully. I may need to speak with you again tonight."
"That's fine." Ruth looked at the notebook beside her. "If I say I saw something, I ought to be willing to put my name under it."
Laura was quiet for a moment. "You don't need to be fearless, Mrs. Walker. You just need to be accurate."
"I can do accurate."
After the call ended, Laura opened the video on a secure workstation and began watching from the beginning. She saw Mercer. She saw Maya. Then she noticed the younger deputy standing near the patrol cruiser. Laura paused the video on his face and read the name visible on his uniform: Noah Alvarez.
She picked up the phone. "Find him."
Noah Alvarez returned to the sheriff's office shortly after midnight. Boone had ordered him back before he could go home, and a supplemental report was already waiting on a desk in the small conference room. Boone stood beside the table while Mercer sat near the wall with a cup of coffee.
"Read it," Boone said.
Noah picked up the report. The first paragraph described the roadside contact as a vehicle identification investigation. The second stated that the Harley's identification markings appeared damaged before Mercer began his inspection.
Noah stopped reading. "That is false."
Boone remained calm. "Finish it."
"I don't need to."
"You need to know what you are refusing before you refuse it."
Noah looked down again. The report stated that Maya had become uncooperative, interfered with the inspection, and was temporarily restrained for officer safety. It also claimed that no formal arrest had taken place and that Maya had left the roadside voluntarily after the contact was resolved.
Noah placed the paper on the table. "She did not leave voluntarily."
Boone pulled out a chair. "Sit down."
"I'm fine standing."
Boone looked at him for a moment. "You have been on this job six years."
Noah said nothing.
"You have a mortgage?"
