Mercer unlocked the door but did not enter. "Boone says you have been watching our department for a while."
Maya looked at him. "I did not say that."
"Your file did."
"You read only part of it."
Mercer stepped inside. "How much is there?"
Maya did not answer.
"How many seizures?"
Silence.
"How many reports have you looked at?"
She continued watching him. Mercer pulled out the second chair and sat down. "You think Boone is going to take the fall for this?"
Maya waited before answering. "I think Boone did not swing the baton."
Mercer's expression changed. "That is all you have?"
"I did not say that."
"He knew how the seizure process worked."
"I am sure he did."
"He knew what happened to those vehicles."
Maya leaned back slightly. "You are talking more than I am."
Mercer stopped. For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Maya said, "Your name is on the roadside contact."
Mercer's jaw tightened.
"Your name is on the damage photographs."
He looked toward the door.
"Your voice is on the radio request."
Mercer stood. "You are trying to make me nervous."
"No. I am explaining why Boone does not need to be nervous yet."
Mercer stared at her.
Maya continued, "He did not strike the Harley. He did not put me in cuffs. He did not open the saddlebag."
"He told me what to do after."
"After?"
The single word stayed between them. Mercer left without another question. Maya heard him walk into the warehouse.
Several minutes later, Boone arrived. He entered the office carrying the federal file. "What did Mercer ask you?"
Maya looked at him. "You could ask him."
