Boone continued. "The identification problem was observed during roadside inspection. The damage is documented as pre-existing. No formal arrest was completed."

Noah stared at him. "She is still locked in that room."

Boone turned to him. "Then she is not in county custody."

"That does not make it better."

"No, it makes it harder to trace."

Noah stepped back. Mercer looked at Boone. "What happens in the morning?"

Boone looked through the office window toward the warehouse. "By sunrise, this stop never happened."

Inside the locked room, Maya could hear enough of the conversation to understand the decision. She turned toward the small glass panel in the door and looked past the men toward the Harley.

Boone returned to the room. "Anything you want to tell me before we start fixing this?"

Maya looked at him. "Only one thing."

Boone waited.

"Then you had better hope this place does not remember sound."

Boone moved quickly once he had made the decision. He took Mercer's patrol bag, removed Maya's credentials and the federal file, then carried both into the small office beside the main desk.

"Get me every roadside entry from the last hour," he told Mercer. "Dispatch notes, tow request, unit status, everything."

Mercer opened a county laptop on the desk. "The tow request is already canceled."

"Canceled is not erased."

Noah stood near the doorway. "You are talking about changing an official record."

Boone looked at him. "I am talking about correcting a roadside contact that was never completed."

"She was handcuffed."

"She was never booked."

"You just said that like it solves the problem."

Boone turned back to Mercer. "What did you tell dispatch?"

"Possible identification issue. Tow requested. Then I cleared the stop."

"Good. Keep the final entry. Remove anything that suggests an arrest was completed."

Noah stepped closer. "You cannot remove radio traffic. That already happened."

Boone did not answer him. Mercer began typing.

Maya could see part of the main office through the narrow glass panel in the locked room. She could not read the screen, but she could hear the conversation.

Boone picked up one of the photographs Mercer had taken at the roadside. It showed the Harley after the headlight had been broken and the tank had been dented. "This becomes the initial condition photo."

Mercer looked up. "There are earlier images on my phone."

"Delete them from the working folder."

Noah shook his head. "Those earlier images show the bike before you damaged it."

Boone turned slowly. "You need to stop using that word."

"What word?"
