My daughter slapped me thirty-seven minutes before I was supposed to walk her down the aisle.

The sound was louder than I expected.

Not because she hit me particularly hard, but because we were standing in the marble foyer of the Willow Crest Estate outside Nashville, where every sound seemed to travel. Her bridesmaids stopped talking. The wedding planner froze with a clipboard against her chest. A florist carrying white roses looked down as though she had suddenly become fascinated by the floor.

And my daughter, Emily, stood in front of me in the wedding dress I had paid $6,800 for, shaking with anger.

“Get out.”

I touched my cheek.

“What?”

“I said get out.”

“Emily.”

“Do not say my name like that.”

Her voice cracked.

“You have controlled this entire wedding, and now you’re trying to destroy my marriage before it even starts.”

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

She laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

I looked around.

Her maid of honor, Rachel, was crying.

My younger sister Laura stood near the staircase with one hand over her mouth.

The wedding planner, Melissa Grant, looked like she wanted the building to swallow her.

I turned back to my daughter.

“Emily, I genuinely don’t know what you think I’ve done.”

She reached into the pocket hidden inside her gown and pulled out her phone.

Then she shoved the screen toward me.

A message.

My name appeared at the top.

MOM.

Below it was a screenshot of what looked like a banking notification.

HONEYMOON PAYMENT CANCELED.

$12,400 REVERSAL REQUESTED.

Another screenshot beneath it showed a text apparently from me to Emily’s fiancé, Daniel:

If you go through with this marriage after everything I warned you about, neither of you should expect another dollar from me.

I stared.

Then I looked at Emily.

“I did not send that.”

Her face hardened.

“Stop.”

“I didn’t.”

“You canceled our honeymoon this morning.”

“No.”

“You called the hotel last week and tried to change the guest list.”

“I did not.”

“You threatened Daniel.”

“No.”

“You told his mother I was making a mistake.”

That one stopped me.

Because I had.

Not exactly those words.

But close enough that lying now would destroy whatever little credibility remained.

“I told Rebecca I was worried about how fast everything was moving.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“There.”

“That is not the same as trying to stop your wedding.”

“You have been trying to stop this wedding for six months.”

“No.”

“You hated every decision.”

“That is not true.”

“You hated the venue.”

“I thought it was too expensive.”

“You hated the dress.”

“I thought the first one was better.”

“You hated Daniel’s family.”

“I did not.”

“You hated that I wanted a band instead of strings.”

“I paid for the band.”

“Exactly!”

Her scream echoed through the foyer.

Everyone went silent again.

Emily’s hands shook.

“You keep saying that.”

I stared.

“What?”

“I paid.”

“I paid for the band.”

“I paid for the dress.”

“I paid the venue.”

“I paid the planner.”

“I paid for the flowers.”

“Do you hear yourself?”

My mouth opened.

Nothing came.

Emily’s eyes filled.

“You think because you wrote the checks, every opinion becomes a vote.”

“That is not fair.”

“No?”

She stepped closer.

“I have spent this entire year asking myself whether I actually wanted things or whether I wanted them because I knew you would approve.”

I felt something shift inside me.

Not guilt yet.

Resistance.

Because from my side, the past year had looked very different.

I had offered.
