“Did you?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

“She thinks I threatened Daniel financially.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Laura looked at me.

I stared.

“What?”

“You do threaten people financially.”

My jaw tightened.

“I do not.”

“You do.”

“When?”

“When you paid for Mom’s roof and then spent two years telling her she should not sell the house.”

“That is not a threat.”

“When you helped me with my divorce attorney and then told me three times I should not reconcile with Chris.”

“You should not have reconciled with Chris.”

“I know.”

Laura smiled sadly.

“You were right.”

“That does not make it less controlling.”

I stared at her.

Wrong parking lot.

Wrong day.

“Whose side are you on?”

“Yours.”

“That does not sound like it.”

“It is.”

She stepped closer.

“I think Emily was completely wrong to hit you.”

“I think what she said about Dad was cruel.”

“I also think we are not going to survive this family if everybody spends the next year pretending only one person did something wrong.”

I closed my eyes.

“Not now.”

“Fine.”

Laura touched my arm.

“Then do not drive.”

I gave her the keys.

We sat in her rented SUV for almost twenty minutes.

Neither spoke.

At one point my phone rang.

Emily.

I stared.

Laura looked toward me.

“Answer?”

“No.”

The call stopped.

Then Daniel called.

I declined.

Then Melissa.

Wedding planner.

Declined.

Then Rachel.

Declined.

Then an unknown number.

I turned the phone off.

At 4:52 p.m., I should have been standing beside my daughter while someone adjusted her veil.

Instead I was sitting in a parking lot, forty yards from a wedding I had paid more than eighty thousand dollars to attend.

At 5:00, the ceremony began.

I know because the music carried across the property.

They did not delay for me.

That hurt.

Then I realized I would have been angrier if they had.

Contradictory feelings are still real.

Laura stayed with me until the processional finished.

Then she said:

“I need to go inside.”

I looked at her.

“You should.”

“You sure?”

“No.”

She waited.

I nodded.

“Go.”

She squeezed my hand.

Then left.

I sat alone through most of the ceremony.

At one point I considered walking toward the lawn.

Not to interrupt.

Just to watch from the back.

I did not.

Because Emily had told me to leave.

If I returned because I believed motherhood gave me special access to boundaries, I would be proving one of her arguments while denying it.

That thought made me angrier.

Useful things often do.

So I stayed.

At 5:36, I heard applause.

Married.

My daughter was married.

I had not seen it.

I turned the car key.

Then remembered the keys were with Laura.

I laughed.
