Daniel shifted.

I looked toward him.

“And I did it to you too.”

He nodded carefully.

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Thank you.”

I looked back at Emily.

“You said something yesterday.”

“That you stopped knowing whether you wanted things or wanted things I approved.”

“I don’t think I created all of that.”

“No.”

“But I created some.”

She cried quietly.

I continued.

“Your father and I paid for college.”

“Your first car.”

“The apartment deposit.”

“The wedding.”

“I have always attached advice.”

Emily almost smiled.

“Advice?”

“Fine.”

“Instructions.”

She laughed through tears.

“Better.”

I smiled too.

Then became serious.

“I think I have used money to stay central in your adult life.”

Emily’s face changed.

“Why?”

The question was not angry.

That made it harder.

I looked toward the window.

“Because after your father died, everything got smaller.”

“My house.”

“My routines.”

“My future.”

“You were the one thing that still made me necessary.”

Emily started crying harder.

I continued.

“When you got engaged, I was happy.”

“And terrified.”

“Not because Daniel is bad.”

“I thought your family was changing and my role would shrink.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Fair.

I glanced toward him.

“That was never yours to fix.”

He nodded.

Then Emily asked:

“Is that why you didn’t like Rebecca?”

I laughed.

“No.”

That surprised everyone.

“I didn’t like Rebecca because Rebecca is exhausting.”

Daniel covered a smile.

“Mom.”

Emily almost laughed.

I continued.

“But I also competed with her.”

“That is true.”

Daniel said before thinking.

I looked at him.

He went pale.

Emily laughed.

For the first time since the slap, all three of us laughed.

Briefly.

Then the room settled again.

Rebecca.

We had avoided the larger question.

Emily wiped her face.

“She admitted she created the fake emails.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I don’t care about the technical details.”

“Neither do I.”

“She used a temporary number.”

“Made a fake resort email.”

“Copied your writing style from old group texts.”

I stared.

“She had my messages?”

“I forwarded things.”

Emily looked ashamed.

“During arguments.”

Of course.

Mothers rarely consider that their texts become evidence in other family systems.

I exhaled.

“Why?”

Emily explained.

Rebecca believed I was controlling the wedding.

Not entirely wrong.

She believed Daniel was becoming financially dependent on my money.
