Also not entirely wrong.

She believed Emily would regret letting me dominate the marriage.

Possible.

So Rebecca decided to accelerate the conflict.

If Emily saw me becoming openly threatening, she would finally “stand up for herself.”

That was how Rebecca described it.

I stared.

“She fabricated abuse to teach you to recognize abuse.”

“Yes.”

“Remarkable.”

Emily looked down.

Daniel said:

“She says she thought Claire would eventually say something similar anyway.”

I looked at him.

“That is not a defense.”

“I know.”

“She thinks it is.”

“Not anymore.”

“What happened after I left?”

Daniel took a breath.

He confronted Rebecca with the resort call.

At first she denied it.

Then Emily showed the fake phone number.

Rebecca accused me of having manipulated the reservation system to make her look guilty.

Daniel checked the number.

It was linked to a temporary messaging service paid with a card ending in the same four digits as Rebecca’s.

She denied knowing what he meant.

Then her husband, Tom, asked:

“Is that the Visa you use for your travel account?”

She stopped.

That was enough.

Eventually she admitted the messages.

Not gracefully.

She called them “copies.”

“Examples.”

“Things Claire might have said.”

Daniel told her that impersonating me was not an example.

It was impersonation.

Rebecca started crying.

Said everyone was choosing me.

At her son’s wedding.

That sentence made something click for Emily.

Two mothers.

Both afraid of losing position.

Both using different tools.

Me: money.

Rebecca: manipulation.

Neither trusting our children enough to let marriage rearrange the family naturally.

One crossed a far more serious line.

But the underlying fear rhymed.

I hated that.

Because villains are easier when they share nothing with you.

Emily looked at me.

“Daniel asked his parents to leave.”

“Both?”

“His dad said he was going with her.”

I nodded.

“How is Daniel?”

He looked directly at me.

“Angry.”

“Good.”

“I also feel stupid.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew Mom hated how much Claire was paying.”

He looked toward Emily.

“And I knew she thought you were too influenced by your mother.”

“But I treated those as opinions.”

“Which they were.”

“Yes.”

“Until she started acting on them.”

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“I should have noticed.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He looked up.

“Do not do that.”

“What?”

“Turn hindsight into responsibility.”

“You were manipulated too.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Thank you.”

I continued.

“But you did receive a threatening text supposedly from me and chose not to ask me.”

“Yes.”

“That part is yours.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

We talked for three hours.

Not continuously.

Coffee.

Silence.

Crying.

At one point Emily asked whether I wanted the wedding money back.
