If they had separated, that would have been theirs too.

I had learned.

At ten years, Emily hosted an anniversary dinner.

Small.

Family only.

She asked me to give a toast.

I almost said no.

Then:

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“No veto afterward?”

She smiled.

“You’re allowed an opinion.”

“That is dangerous.”

I stood after dinner.

Looked at my daughter.

Daniel.

Sophie.

Their younger son, Michael, named after his grandfather.

Rebecca sat across from me.

Older now.

Softer.

Tom beside her.

Laura already crying.

Of course.

I kept the toast short.

“I missed the first wedding toast.”

Everyone went quiet.

Emily’s eyes filled.

I continued.

“That was painful.”

“But maybe the speech I would have given then needed ten years of editing.”

Small laugh.

“I thought paying for a wedding meant I was giving my daughter something.”

“Sometimes I was.”

“Sometimes I was also trying to purchase reassurance that I would still matter after she built a new family.”

Emily cried.

I smiled.

“She taught me that love can survive becoming less central.”

“That was not a lesson I wanted.”

More laughter.

“Daniel taught me that a son-in-law can disagree with you and still show up.”

“Rebecca taught me…”

I looked across the table.

She raised one eyebrow.

Careful.

Everyone laughed.

I continued.

“That being partly right about someone is not permission to treat them wrongly.”

Rebecca nodded.

Then:

“And my daughter taught me something harder.”

I looked at Emily.

“One terrible day can remain terrible without becoming the only story two people ever tell about each other.”

Silence.

Then I raised my glass.

“To the marriage you actually built.”

“Not the wedding any of us tried to control.”

Everyone drank.

Emily hugged me afterward.

No applause needed.

Years later, Sophie became engaged.

That was when I knew the old story had become history instead of an active wound.

She was twenty-seven.

Smart.

Stubborn.

Too much like all of us.

She announced the engagement over dinner.

Emily screamed.

Daniel cried.

I cried.

Rebecca, eighty now, asked when the wedding would be.

Sophie laughed.

“Everybody relax.”

Then she pointed at Emily.

“No spreadsheets.”

Emily stared.

“I do not make spreadsheets.”

I almost choked.

“You absolutely do.”

“Mom.”

I laughed.

“Genetic.”

Sophie looked at me.

“Nana, I have a question.”

“Yes?”

“Will you help with the wedding?”

The entire table went silent.

They all looked at me.

I stared back.

“What?”

Emily started laughing.

Daniel covered his face.
