It looks really scary

This is actually a type of fungus known scientifically as Xylaria polymorpha, also called "Dead Man's Fingers." If you're not knowledgeable about this fungus, you might risk getting poisoned by it.

This fungus grows to a height of about 3-10 cm, with a diameter of 2.5 cm, a hard stem, and a rounded tip. It typically appears in the spring on decaying wood. Its bizarre shape makes it resemble moldy, lifeless fingers of a zombie rising from the grave.

Although it looks strange, this fungus is quite useful. It uses enzymes to decompose organic matter, such as dry plant branches and leaves, into humus, minerals, and simpler organic compounds. It can break down difficult substances like cellulose and lignin into inorganic matter. Additionally, it can assimilate simple substances into complex ones, thereby enhancing soil fertility.

In its early stages, this fungus has a white tip that looks just like a human fingernail. However, by the end of its life cycle, the "dead man's fingers" fungus turns black and begins to decay. At this stage, it contains toxins that can be lethal. Therefore, it is best to stay away from them if you come across them.

The "dead man's fingers" fungus does not only grow in forests but can also appear in home gardens, in any damp places such as rotting wood, hidden in moss, or under rocks. Therefore, adults should be vigilant and prevent children from approaching and getting poisoned by this fungus.
