During the ensuing recess, Simone found Peterson in police custody. "Are you okay? What happened?"
"They were waiting at my apartment," he said, holding an ice pack to his face. "I barely got away. But I had to come. The people need to know the truth."
"Mr. Peterson," Victoria Hale's voice was cold as she approached. "I wonder if you've considered the consequences of perjury? Your history of mental health issues? Your gambling debts?"
"Are you threatening him?" Simone demanded.
"Simply stating facts," Hale smiled. "Facts that will come out if he insists on testifying."
Back in session, Simone filed a formal complaint against Judge Kessler, citing bias and potential conflicts of interest. It was a risky move, but Peterson's appearance had given her an opening.
"Your Honor, given Mr. Peterson's allegations and the pattern of witness intimidation, I move for an immediate investigation into—"
"Miss Johnson!" Kessler's face was purple. "I warned you about these baseless accusations!"
"Your Honor." A man in a suit entered the courtroom, showing credentials. "I'm Thomas Ward, State Judicial Review Board. We've received multiple complaints about this case. I'm here to observe."
The atmosphere shifted instantly. Kessler's bluster deflated, while Victoria Hale's perfect composure cracked slightly. Simone felt a glimmer of hope: maybe the truth could come out after all.
That hope was tested that evening when they returned home to find their house vandalized: windows were broken, furniture overturned, and spray-painted warnings covered the walls. But most disturbing was William Johnson's law degree, smashed in its frame, a note attached: Next time it won't be glass breaking.
Sarah broke down crying while Marcus called the police. Simone stood in her grandfather's study, glass crunching under her feet, rage building in her chest.
"I won't let them win," she whispered, picking up a shard of the broken frame. "I won't let them destroy everything you built, Grandpa."
Later that night, as they cleaned up the mess, Ashley called with news: "The Judicial Review Board is launching a full investigation into Kessler. They're appointing a new judge tomorrow."
Simone sat on her bed, surrounded by case files and broken glass. The stakes were escalating, the danger mounting with each revelation. But she thought of Michael Peterson, battered but still fighting for the truth. She thought of Mrs. Walker finding her courage again. She thought of her grandfather, facing down threats and intimidation to build a legacy of justice.
