After Mrs. Walker left, the family gathered in the living room. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the floor as they considered their options.
"What exactly would this involve?" Marcus finally asked. "If we let you do this?"
Simone pulled out her timeline. "First, I'd file a notice of appearance as counsel, along with a motion for permission to proceed as non-attorney representation. We'd have a hearing on that motion where I'd need to demonstrate my knowledge of relevant law and procedure."
Sarah leaned forward. "And if they approve it?"
"Then we prepare for trial. We'll need to gather evidence, interview witnesses, file preliminary motions." Simone's voice grew stronger as she outlined her strategy. "We'll focus on the inconsistencies in their case, build a timeline that proves we couldn't have done this."
Marcus exchanged a look with his wife. They could see William's spirit in their daughter: the same determination, the same unwavering belief in justice.
"If we do this," Marcus said slowly, "we do it smart. You'll need help with the research, with preparing documents."
"I know, Daddy."
"And you'll need to be careful. These people... they don't play fair."
Simone nodded. "I understand."
Sarah reached for her daughter's hand. "Your grandfather always said you were destined for great things. I don't think this is what he had in mind, but..." She managed a small smile. "...he'd be right here helping you if he could."
The next morning, Simone stood before the courthouse, its imposing columns reaching toward the sky. She wore her best dress, her hair neatly braided, her documents organized in a borrowed briefcase. Her hand trembled slightly as she pushed through the heavy doors, but her steps were steady.
The clerk's office was quiet, just opening for the day. Simone approached the counter, standing as tall as she could.
"I need to file a notice of appearance as counsel," she said clearly, "for the defendants in Johnson v. Bancroft Developments."
The clerk looked up, clearly expecting an adult. Her eyes widened as she took in Simone's youth. "You're the counsel?"
