Beyond Stroke, This Dangerous Disease Surges During Cold Weather

During the cold season, hospital admissions for respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) tend to rise sharply. Many patients experience prolonged shortness of breath, require intensive treatment, and are readmitted multiple times.

In early January 2026, prolonged cold spells affected many provinces in the North Central and Northern regions, with temperatures dropping significantly and humidity remaining high. This persistent cold weather not only disrupts daily life but also becomes a major trigger for respiratory illnesses, particularly chronic lung diseases.

At specialized medical facilities, doctors have reported a noticeable increase in hospitalizations related to breathing difficulties, pneumonia, COPD, and bronchial asthma. Elderly patients account for a large proportion of these cases.

According to records from the Internal Medicine Department II at Ha Tinh Lung Hospital, the number of patients admitted during periods of severe cold is significantly higher than usual. Many patients arrive in serious condition, suffering from persistent shortness of breath and requiring intensive care. Some are hospitalized repeatedly within short intervals.

One patient shared that every time the weather turns cold, he experiences constant coughing and difficulty breathing. Each year, he is admitted to the hospital several times, sometimes returning only days after being discharged. Doctors have advised him to keep warm and take medication regularly, but for older adults, even slight changes in weather can cause severe discomfort.

In addition to patients with COPD, many other elderly individuals are hospitalized due to acute respiratory illnesses. A 68-year-old man reported that over the past week he had developed severe coughing, fatigue, weakness, and rapid weight loss. After seeking medical attention, he was diagnosed with pneumonia and required intensive treatment.
