As she prepared to leave, Mabel opened a small jewelry box sitting on her worktable. Inside was a delicate gold necklace, simple but radiant.

"My mama gave me this," she said quietly. "She put it around my neck the day the world tried to tell me I wasn't good enough." She took Naomi's hand and pressed the necklace into it. "Now I'm giving it to you."

Naomi stared at her, stunned. "Mabel, I can't take this."

"Yes, you can. And you will. Because Saturday night, child, you're not walking into that ballroom alone. You're walking with every woman who refused to bow her head."

The air seemed to still. Naomi held the necklace tightly, warmth spreading through her fingers, through her chest.

As she stepped out into the cold evening, the sky streaked with fading pink and gold, she realized something: she wasn't afraid anymore. Humiliation had cracked something open inside her. And through that crack, the light was beginning to shine.

Naomi returned to Mabel's shop the next afternoon with the kind of nervous energy that made her hands tremble slightly as she pushed open the door. The bell chimed again, soft, familiar now, and the warmth inside washed over her from the radiator and from Mabel's knowing smile.

"There she is," Mabel said, tying a measuring tape around her neck like a badge of honor. "Come on in, baby. We got work to do."

The work, as it turned out, was not just the dress.

Mabel stood Naomi in front of a tall mirror framed in gilt that had lost some of its shine over the years. It reflected a woman who still carried shadows under her eyes, but whose shoulders had started to rise from the weight of years of shrinking herself.

"First lesson," Mabel said, tapping Naomi's chin lightly. "Head up. Don't show the world your crown if you keep looking down at your feet."

Naomi tried, lifting her chin. It felt strange, exposed somehow, vulnerable. She'd learned long ago that walking small drew less attention, less trouble, fewer assumptions from people who thought a cleaner should only take up so much air.

But Mabel shook her head. "Higher."

Naomi obeyed. Something shifted in the mirror—just a little, but enough that she caught her breath.

"There it is," Mabel whispered.
