She turned to see a distinguished older man approaching: Dr. Armistead, former director of the Southside Youth Science Initiative. His gray hair gleamed under the chandelier, and his eyes lit with recognition.

"It is you!" he said warmly. "You were the young woman who won first place for biomedical innovation all those years ago! Where have you been hiding?"

Conversations around them dimmed as several nearby guests turned with interest. Naomi felt heat rise in her cheeks, but not from shame.

"I've just been taking care of family," she said quietly.

Evan's brows shot up; shock flickered across his face. "You were a science award winner?" he asked, stunned. "You?"

She glanced at him, steady. "Yes. Me."

Awareness rippled through Evan's expression like puzzle pieces locking into place. He looked at her differently now, seeing her not as the cleaner he barely noticed, but as a woman with depth, intelligence, story, and strength.

Before he could speak again, a bell chimed from the stage, signaling the start of the charity presentation. Naomi felt her pulse quicken. The night was shifting. The air inside the ballroom stirred thick with possibility and revelation. Whatever came next would change things. She wasn't the only one who felt it.

Even Evan seemed to sense the turning of a page as he whispered, "Naomi... I had no idea."

She lifted her chin ever so slightly. "You weren't looking."

And with that, she walked toward the stage as the room's attention followed her—not with laughter, not with mockery, but with wonder.

The chandeliers above glowed brighter somehow, halos of gold catching in the soft waves of her gown as Naomi moved through the crowd. Conversations hushed. Faces turned. Even the quartet paused mid-phrase before picking up the melody again, quieter now, as if respecting a shift in the air.

Naomi wasn't sure how her legs kept moving. Her heart thudded in her chest, each beat loud enough to drown out her doubts. All she wanted was a corner to disappear into, but the universe seemed intent on placing her squarely in the light.

She reached an empty spot near the stage just as the charity presenter, a woman in an iridescent blue dress, stepped forward. Naomi clasped her hands together, hoping her trembling wasn't visible. The presenter spoke warmly about the foundation's mission, about the children they hoped to support, about resilience against hardship.

Naomi tried to focus, but her senses felt sharp and blurred all at once: colors brighter, sounds softer, her body lighter and heavier at the same time. She'd dreamed of rooms like this once, back when she thought she might cure diseases or invent something that saved lives, back when her father told her she could change the world.
