A laugh echoed in her memory—the cruel laugh from the corridor. It tightened her throat.

Then another sound slipped through the noise: someone's footsteps drawing closer behind her. She didn't need to turn to know who had followed.

"Naomi," Evan said quietly from her shoulder. The warmth of his breath, the tremble in his voice—she felt them before she absorbed the words. "We didn't know. I didn't know."

She kept her gaze forward. "You didn't need to know," she said. "You just needed to treat me like a person."

There was no anger in her tone, just truth. And that truth struck him harder than any accusation.

Before he could respond, the fundraiser shifted to a slideshow on the screen above the stage: photos of children in medical centers, classroom programs, community clinics. Then a new image appeared: a little boy sitting on an examination table, small hands folded nervously in his lap, wires taped behind his ear.

Naomi's breath caught. Isaiah.

The condition wasn't his, yet the resemblance cut into her like a blade made of memory.

"This," the presenter announced, "is Anthony. At only eight years old, he's losing his hearing. Doctors believe a cochlear implant could restore nearly sixty percent of his sound recognition. But the procedure will cost far beyond what his family can cover."

Murmurs rippled across the ballroom. Naomi felt her eyes sting, her hand pressing gently against her chest as if steadying her heart.

The presenter continued, "We invite our guests to contribute. Every dollar brings us closer to giving this child a chance to hear his mother's voice again."

Silence followed: soft, expectant. Then came the clink of a champagne glass being set down.

Naomi didn't think, didn't debate, didn't hesitate. She stepped forward. Her hand reached into the small purse Mabel lent her. She pulled out a single, carefully folded bill—the last $20 she had set aside for groceries and Isaiah's school lunch next week. It wasn't enough. It wasn't even close. But it was what she had.

She placed it gently inside the donation envelope at the front table.

A hush fell over the area around her. Evan watched. Dylan watched from across the room, confusion tightening his mouth. Dr. Armistead's brows lifted, touched by her grace.
