"You brought life back to this place," Mabel told Naomi the day the renovation finished. "Just by walking into it."

Naomi shook her head. "You're the one who saw me."

"You were shining long before I looked," Mabel said. "I just had the privilege of being the first person who didn't look away."

And then, three months after the gala, something happened Naomi had never dreamed possible: Isaiah heard birds.

They were walking home from his therapy appointment when he stopped suddenly on the sidewalk, eyes wide.

"What's that sound?" he whispered.

Naomi listened. Above them, perched on a wire, a small cluster of sparrows chirped in uneven little melodies.

Naomi's breath hitched. "Those are birds, baby."

Isaiah laughed—a bright, startled burst of joy. "They sound happy!"

Tears slid down Naomi's cheeks before she could stop them. She pulled him into her arms. "You can hear them," she whispered. "You can finally hear them."

He nodded into her shoulder. And in that single moment, on a cracked South Side sidewalk under the hum of traffic, Naomi felt her world realign into something whole.

Later that night, Naomi sat on her fire escape, watching the city blink awake in the distance. The summer air was warm, the kind of warmth that wrapped around the bones rather than scorching them.

Her phone buzzed. This time, she didn't hesitate.

"Hey," Evan's voice said on the other end, gentle, warm, almost smiling through the line. "I heard the good news about Isaiah."
