"And so," Evan continued, "I am establishing the Naomi Brooks Science Fellowship: a full scholarship and living stipend, so she can return to her studies whenever she chooses."

Naomi's vision blurred at the edges. She blinked hard, steadying her breath. Her fingers trembled against the chair.

But Evan wasn't done.

"This fellowship will support other young Black scientists across Chicago," he added. "People with brilliance, courage, and drive, but without opportunity."

The room erupted again, louder this time. Some guests stood; others cried. Even a few skeptics reluctantly clapped, swept up in the emotional tide. Naomi felt her heart stretch in her chest: equal parts awe, disbelief, and something quieter—something like hope.

Evan stepped closer to the edge of the stage, speaking softly now: "And finally... Naomi, I want to say this in front of everyone, because you deserved better from me: I'm sorry. I'm deeply, truly sorry."

A hush wrapped the room. Evan's voice wavered just slightly—not from weakness, but from something far more honest.

"You deserved respect; I gave you mockery. You deserved recognition; I gave you invisibility. You deserved humanity, and I failed to see yours."

Naomi exhaled shakily. Tears pressed behind her eyes, but didn't fall. The moment felt too big to cry in, too sacred.

Evan swallowed. "But you showed me who you are," he finished. "And you reminded me who I should be."

Silence. Not cold, not shocked—soft, absorbing.

Then applause: thunderous, rising, rolling like a storm breaking open after years of drought. People stood. People turned toward Naomi—people who had ignored her minutes before, but now they clapped with genuine respect.

And for the first time in a very long time, Naomi felt something expand inside her: worth. Not because Evan validated her, not because the room applauded, but because she had acted with integrity when no one was watching.

The applause faded gradually. Naomi drew a breath, then another, willing herself to steady.
