Jennifer sat down next to him on the ground. "Because music brought us together, and because everyone deserves a second chance."Two hours later, David looked like a completely different person. The barber had cut his hair and trimmed his beard. He was wearing a clean white shirt and dark pants that fit him perfectly. When he looked in the mirror, he saw the person he used to be three years ago."I almost forgot what I looked like clean," David said with a nervous laugh.Meanwhile, at the concert hall, William was having the most stressful day of his career. He had to call the concert sponsors and explain that there would be some changes to the program. He tried to make it sound exciting rather than terrifying."We're adding a special guest artist," he told each caller. "Someone very talented who hasn't performed in a while. It's going to be a unique experience."Some of the sponsors were curious; others were worried. But William's reputation was good enough that most people trusted his judgment.Lisa was handling the even harder job of calling the music critics and journalists who would be reviewing the concert. She had to convince them that the changes would be worth their time."Trust me," she told the critic from the city newspaper. "This is going to be a concert that people talk about for years."By afternoon, David was back at the concert hall for his first real rehearsal with the full orchestra. He looked handsome and professional in his new clothes, but William could see that he was nervous."How are you feeling?" William asked."Like I might throw up," David admitted. "It's been three years since I performed for anyone other than pigeons and stray cats."The orchestra members gathered around David to offer support. Over the past day, word had spread about his incredible talent, and everyone was excited to work with him."Remember," Jennifer said, "just play what you feel. That's what made yesterday so special."William had spent all night working out a program that would showcase David's talents while still giving the audience some familiar music. They would start with a traditional piece that the orchestra knew well, then David would perform a solo improvisation, and then they would end with a collaborative piece where David could lead the orchestra in creating something new.
