"The most important thing," William told everyone, "is that we support each other. This is an experiment, and experiments sometimes fail. But they also sometimes create magic."The first rehearsal was rocky. David was so nervous that his hands were shaking, and he made several mistakes he never would have made the day before. The orchestra members tried to be encouraging, but William could see that everyone was starting to worry."Let's take a break," William announced.David walked off the stage and sat in one of the audience seats with his head in his hands. "I can't do this, William. I'm going to embarrass everyone."William sat down next to him. "David, do you remember what you told me yesterday about music being a language?"David nodded."Well, right now, you're trying to speak that language with stage fright covering your mouth. But the language is still inside you. We just need to help you find it again."Lisa had an idea. "David, what if we turn off all the lights except for the stage lights? That way, you can't see the empty seats and you can pretend it's just us here."They tried the rehearsal again with dimmed lights, and David immediately played better. Without the distraction of seeing the concert hall around him, he could focus on the music. By evening, they had run through the program three times. It wasn't perfect, but it was good enough to give William hope that they wouldn't completely embarrass themselves. As the sun set, people started arriving for the concert. William watched through his office window as cars pulled up and well-dressed people walked toward the entrance. His stomach felt like it was full of butterflies.David was in the small room behind the stage that they used as a dressing area. He was pacing back and forth, practicing piano pieces on a silent keyboard."David?" Lisa said, knocking on the door. "How are you doing?""I keep forgetting how to play," David said. "My hands feel like they belong to someone else."Jennifer peeked her head in. "David, I have something that might help." She handed him a small photo. "This is a picture of my daughter. She's eight years old, and she's just starting to learn piano. When I told her about you, she said she hopes you play something beautiful tonight. I want you to remember that there are people out there who need to hear your music."
