David's eyes got sad. "My family died in a car accident. My parents and my little sister. I was supposed to be in the car with them, but I stayed home to practice piano instead." His voice broke a little. "After that, I couldn't... I couldn't handle anything. I dropped out of school, lost my apartment, lost everything."William felt like someone had punched him in the stomach. He had been so quick to judge David, but he had never imagined there was such a tragic story behind his situation."I'm so sorry," Lisa whispered.David wiped his eyes with his sleeve. "For two years, I couldn't touch a piano. Every time I tried, I would think about that day and how I chose music over being with my family. But recently, I started hearing melodies in my head again. I can't make them stop, and I can't ignore them."Roberto patted David's shoulder. "That's why you came to listen to our rehearsals."David nodded. "Being near real music again... it helps. It makes me feel like maybe I'm not completely broken."William stood there listening to David's story and feeling terrible about how he had treated him, but he also felt confused. As a conductor, he had seen many talented musicians over the years. What he had just heard from David was beyond talented; it was extraordinary."David," William said carefully, "would you be willing to come inside and play our piano, just for a few minutes?"David looked up with surprise. "But yesterday you said—""Yesterday I was wrong about a lot of things," William admitted. "I'd like to hear you play on a proper instrument."Lisa smiled. "That's a wonderful idea."David looked scared. "I don't know if I should. What if I mess up? What if I'm not as good as you think?""Then you mess up," William said simply. "But David, I've been working with musicians for twenty years. What I just heard you do with that broken piano... that's not something you can fake."They all walked back to the concert hall together. William's hands were shaking a little as he unlocked the door. He wasn't sure why he was doing this, but something told him it was important.
